We present time-dependent ab initio calculations of fragmenting H{sub 2}{sup +} and H{sub 2} molecules in strong laser fields, taking into account all nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom. In particular, very different and apparently contradicting experimental observations on the alignment of fragmenting hydrogen molecules are naturally explained and consistently interpreted. In addition, striking differences in the alignment of fragmenting H{sub 2}{sup +} and H{sub 2} are predicted. Whereas H{sub 2} fragments show decreasing alignment with increasing laser intensity, the alignment of H{sub 2}{sup +} fragments is nearly independent of the intensity. Molecular three-continuum approximation for ionization of H{sub 2} by electron impact

A molecular three-continuum-type approximation is developed to study the (e,2e) reaction for H{sub 2} targets. The molecular nature of the target is treated within the framework of a two-effective-center approximation. The correlate motion of the particles in the final channel of the reaction is taken into account by an adequate product of Coulomb functions. Triple differential cross sections are computed. A good agreement with the available experiments is obtained.

Electron-impact ionization of H{sub 2} using a time-dependent close-coupling method

Electron-impact ionization cross sections for H{sub 2} are calculated using a nonperturbative time-dependent close-coupling method. In a standard frozen-core approximation, the six-dimensional wave function for the valence target electron and the incident projectile electron is expanded in products of rotational functions. The time-dependent Schroedinger equation for the two-electron system is then reduced to a set of close-coupled partial differential equations for the four-dimensional expansion functions in (r{sub 1},{theta}{sub 1},r{sub 2},{theta}{sub 2}) center-of-mass spherical polar coordinates. The nonperturbative close-coupling results are found to be over a factor of 2 lower than perturbative distorted-wave results, but in excellent agreement with experimental measurements,more »« less

Dynamics in electron-impact ionization of H{sub 2}O

We present multiply differential cross sections for electron-impact ionization of the water molecule. The experimental results are compared with theoretical cross sections calculated using a recently developed distorted-wave Born approach for molecules. The experimental cross sections exhibit a very large recoil scattering, which is not predicted by the theory. This has implications for applications of this theoretical approach in areas such as modeling of ionization in biological systems.

Direct evidence of a strong isomer effect in electron-impact double ionization of C{sub 3}H{sub 4}

The electron-impact double ionization of two isomers of C{sub 3}H{sub 4} (allene and propyne) between 25 and 1000 eV has been investigated using time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Unambiguous differences in the partial double-ionization spectra of these isomers are observed over the entire energy range. These isomer effects have been observed in C{sub 3}H{sub 4} through the recording of target product channels and, in particular, when hard collisions involving the transfer of a large amount of energy is involved.
