Beyond Schrödinger-Poisson: nonrelativistic effective field theory for scalar dark matter

Massive scalar fields provide excellent dark matter candidates, whose dynamics are often explored analytically and numerically using nonrelativistic Schrödinger-Poisson (SP) equations in a cosmological context. In this paper, starting from the nonlinear and fully relativistic Klein-Gordon-Einstein (KGE) equations in an expanding universe, we provide a systematic framework for deriving the SP equations, as well as relativistic corrections to them, by integrating out ‘fast modes’ and including nonlinear metric and matter contributions. In Cartan's description, classical particles freely falling in a Newtonian gravitational field follow geodesics of a curved space-time. We cast this geodesic motion into generalized Hamiltonian form and quantize it by Dirac's constraint method in a coordinate-independent way. The Dirac constraint takes a simplified form in special noninertial frames (nonrotating, rigid, Galilean, and Gaussian). Transformation theory of the state function allows us to compare descriptions of a given quantum state by two different observers and to illustrate how the principle of equivalence works for quantum systems. Noncommutative field theory: Nonrelativistic fermionic field coupled to the Chern-Simons field in 2+1 dimensions

We study a noncommutative nonrelativistic fermionic field theory in 2+1 dimensions coupled to the Chern-Simons field. We perform a perturbative analysis of the model and show that up to one loop the ultraviolet divergences are canceled and the infrared divergences are eliminated by the noncommutative Pauli term.

Effective field theory and matching in nonrelativistic gauge theories

The effective Lagrangian and power counting rules for nonrelativistic gauge theories are derived via a systematic expansion in the large c limit. It is shown that the 1/c expansion leads to an effective field theory which incorporates a multipole expansion. Within this theory there is no need for heuristic arguments to determine the scalings of operators. After eliminating c from the lowest order Lagrangian the states of the theory become independent of c and the scaling of an operator is given simply by its overall coefficient.
