We generalize and apply the key elements of the Kibble-Zurek framework of non-equilibrium phase transitions to study the non-equilibrium critical cumulants near the QCD critical point. We demonstrate that the off-equilibrium critical cumulants are expressible as universal scaling functions. Moreover, we discuss how to use off-equilibrium scaling to provide powerful model-independent guidance in searches for the QCD critical point.

Universal finite-time thermodynamics of many-body quantum machines from Kibble-Zurek scaling

We demonstrate the existence of universal features in the finite-time thermodynamics of quantum machines by considering a many-body quantum Otto cycle in which the working medium is driven across quantum critical points during the unitary strokes. Specifically, we consider a quantum engine powered by dissipative energizing and relaxing baths. We show that under very generic conditions, the output work is governed by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism; i.e., it exhibits a universal power-law scaling with the driving speed through the critical points. The Simplest Quantum Model Supporting the Kibble-Zurek Mechanism of Topological Defect Production: Landau-Zener Transitions from a New Perspective

It can be shown that the dynamics of the Landau-Zener model can be accurately described in terms of the Kibble-Zurek theory of the topological defect production in nonequilibrium phase transitions. The simplest quantum model exhibiting the Kibble-Zurek mechanism is presented. A new intuitive description of Landau-Zener dynamics is found.

Light cone dynamics and reverse Kibble-Zurek mechanism in two-dimensional superfluids following a quantum quench

We study the dynamics of the relative phase of a bilayer of two-dimensional superfluids after the two superfluids have been decoupled. We find that on short time scales the relative phase shows 'light cone'-like dynamics and creates a metastable superfluid state, which can be supercritical. We also demonstrate similar light cone dynamics for the transverse field Ising model. On longer time scales the supercritical state relaxes to a disordered state due to dynamical vortex unbinding. This scenario of dynamically suppressed vortex proliferation constitutes a reverse-Kibble-Zurek effect.
