In this work we investigate the variation of the local structure around Cu{sup 2+} as well as the crystal structure in Rb{sub 2}CuCl{sub 4}(H{sub 2}O){sub 2} through x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) as a function of pressure. We show that the application of pressure induces a local structural change in the Jahn-Teller (JT) CuCl{sub 4}(H{sub 2}O){sub 2}{sup 2-} complex from an axially elongated complex to a compressed one, yielding disappearance of the JT distortion related to the four in-plane Cl{sup -} ligands, which are responsible for the antiferrodistortive structure displayed by the crystal at ambient pressure. Origin of the non-linear pressure effects in perovskite manganties: Buckling of Mn-O-Mn bonds and Jahn-Teller distortion of the MnO6 octahedra induced by pressure.

High-pressure resistivity and X-ray diffraction measurements were conducted on La{sub 0.85}MnO{sub 3-{delta}} at 6 and 7 GPa, respectively. At low pressures the metal-insulator transition temperature (TMI) increases linearly up to a critical pressure, P* {approx} 3.4 GPa, followed by reduction in T{sub MI} at higher pressure. Analysis of the bond distances and bond angles reveals that a bandwidth increase drives the increase in T{sub MI} below P*. The reduction in T{sub MI} at higher pressures is found to result from Jahn-Teller distortions of the MnO{sub 6} octahedra. The role of anharmonic interatomic potentials is discussed.

Cooperative Jahn-Teller (JT) distrotion accompanied by electromagnetic-lattice coupling plays a crucial role in numerous important phenomena in materials science. The JT distortion occurring in high-spin 3d⁴ and 3d⁹ configurations in octahedral complexes is common, but similarly large distortion due to lifting the degeneracy of t_2g orbits has so far seldomly observed. Here we report the discovery of pressure-induced cooperative JT effect coupled with a large volume-collapse of ~12.8% and a magnetic moment collapse from S = 5/2 to S = 1/2 at ~20.9 GPa in MnTe.
