We consider the system of three ⁴He atoms to assess whether a pure van der Waals potential can be used as a starting point for an effective field theory to describe three-body processes in ultracold atomic systems. Using a long-range van der Waals interaction in combination with short-distance two-body counterterms, we analyze the dependence of two- and three-body observables on the short-distance regulator that is required due to the singular nature of the van der Waals interaction. This paper provides the theoretical basis for experimentation on van der Waals atom-surface energy as a manifestation of quantum zero-point energy, with a continuously variable parameterization by a Landau-quantizing magnetic field applied normal to the surface. Quantum magnetic field effects in the second-order van der Waals (vdW) atom-surface energy are fully analyzed. Focusing on the electrostatic nonretarded limit, we employ a random phase approximation (RPA) description of the dynamic, nonlocal polarizability of the mobile semi-infinite Landau quantized plasma behind a semiconductor surface. The third-order expression for the dispersion interaction between two atoms is written as a sum over lists of transition matrix elements. Particular attention is given to the C{sub 9}/R{sup 9} interaction which occurs in the homonuclear case when one atom is in an S state and the other is in a P state. Numerical values of the C{sub 9} coefficient are given for the homonuclear alkali-metal dimers. The size of the C{sub 9}:C{sub 3} dispersion coefficient ratio increases for the heavier alkali-metal atoms.
