Inelastic x-ray scattering has been observed in the hexagonal forms of carbon (graphite) and boron nitride (hBN), both above and below their K edges. For excitation energies {ital below} the core threshold, inelastic-loss features are observed, which disperse {ital linearly} with excitation energy (Raman-like behavior). However, {ital above} the threshold, emission features that move in a {ital nonlinear} fashion are observed. We show that these two scattering regimes, which have previously been thought of as separate processes, viz., resonant x-ray Raman scattering (below threshold) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (above threshold), are described by the same theory for resonant fluorescence.more »« less

Electron-hole correlation effects in core-level spectroscopy probed by the resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering map of C{sub 60}

We have employed a unique spectroscopic approach, a resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering (RIXS) map, to identify and separate electron-hole correlation effects in core-level spectroscopy. With this approach, we are able to derive a comprehensive picture of the electronic structure, separating ground state properties (such as the HOMO-LUMO separation) from excited state properties (such as the C 1s core-exciton binding energy of C{sub 60}). In particular, our approach allows us to determine the difference between core- and valence exciton binding energies in C{sub 60}[0.5 ({+-}0.2) eV]. Electron–core hole interactions are critical for proper interpretation of core-level spectroscopies commonly used as analytical tools in materials science. Here we utilize resonant Auger-electron spectroscopy to uniquely identify exciton, shake, and charge-transfer processes that result from the sudden creation of the core hole in both x-ray-absorption and photoemission spectra. These effects are captured for the transition-metal compounds SrTiO₃ and MoS₂ by fully ab initio, combined real-time cumulant, and Bethe-Salpeter equation approaches to account for core hole dynamics and screening.
