NMR study of nematic spin fluctuations in a detwinned single crystal of underdoped $Ba {({Fe}_{1 ₋ x} {Co}_{x})}_{2} {As}_{2}$

We report the experimental details of how mechanical detwinning can be implemented in tandem with high sensitivity nuclear magnetic resonance measurements and use this setup to measure the inplane anisotropy of the spin-lattice relaxation rate in underdoped Ba(Fe_1-xCo_x)₂As₂ with x = 0:048. The anisotropy reaches a maximum of 30% at TN, and the recovery data reveal that the glassy behavior of the spin fluctuations present in the twinned state persist in the fully detwinned crystal. A theoretical model is presented to describe the spin-lattice relaxation rate in terms of anisotropic nematic spin fluctuations.

Here, inelastic neutron scattering is employed to investigate the impact of electronic nematic order on the magnetic spectra of LaFeAsO and Ba(Fe_0.953Co_0.047)₂As₂. These materials are ideal to study the paramagnetic-nematic state, since the nematic order, signaled by the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition at T_S, sets in well above the stripe antiferromagnetic ordering at T_N. We find that the temperature-dependent dynamic susceptibility displays an anomaly at T_S followed by a sharp enhancement in the spinspin correlation length, revealing a strong feedback effect of nematic order on the low-energy magnetic spectrum. NMR evidence for localized spins on Cu(2) sites from Cu NMR in YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ and YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 6. 75/ single crystals

We report /sup 63,65/Cu NMR spectra and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation data for YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/(T/sub c/ = 91 K) and YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 6.75/(T/sub c/ = 5/sub 7/ K) single crystals between 45 and 300 K. An analysis of the spin-lattice relaxation rates gives evidence for localized electronic spins on the planar Cu(2) sites. In YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 6.75/ both fourfold and twofold oxygen-coordinated Cu(1) are observed; the latter experience the same quadrupolar coupling (..nu../sub Q/approx. =31.5 MHz) as the Cu(2) sites but a nearly zero magnetic hyperfine shift and a much slower relaxation rate (d/sup 10/ configuration).
