Continuing uncertainty in the high-pressure melt curves of bcc transition metals has spawned renewed research interest in the phase diagrams of these materials, with tantalum becoming an important prototype. Here, the present paper extends the quantum-based investigation of high- T, P polymorphism and melt in Ta that was begun in Paper I [Haskins et al., Phys. Rev. Metastable silica high pressure polymorphs as structural proxies of deep Earth silicate melts

Modelling of processes involving deep Earth liquids requires information on their structures and compression mechanisms. However, knowledge of the local structures of silicates and silica (SiO₂) melts at deep mantle conditions and of their densification mechanisms is still limited. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of metastable high-pressure silica phases, coesite-IV and coesite-V, using in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction and ab initio simulations. Their crystal structures are drastically different from any previously considered models, but explain well features of pair-distribution functions of highly densified silica glass and molten basalt at high pressure. Rarefaction velocities in shocked tantalum and the high-pressure melting point

The optical analyzer technique has been used to determine the pressure at which shock compressed tantalum can no longer support a longitudinal elastic wave. At 295 GPa, the release wave velocity drops to a value consistent with a calculated bulk sound velocity, indicating partial melting. At higher shock pressures, the bulk sound velocity follows a constant rho ..gamma.. model, where ..gamma.. is the Grueneisen parameter. With these measurements we have identified melting on the Ta Hugonitot, and we have calibrated Ta as a high impedance driver for similar experiments on other materials.
