Lattice collective modes from a continuum model of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Here, we show that the insulating states of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene support a series of collective modes corresponding to local particle-hole excitations on triangular lattice sites. Our theory is based on a continuum model of the magic angle flat bands. When the system is insulating at moiré band filling ν = -3, our calculations show that the ground state supports seven low-energy modes that lie well below the charge gap throughout the moiré Brillouin zone, one of which couples strongly to THz photons. The localized states of a semi-infinite zigzag graphene sheet are studied using a tight-binding model that allows for the inclusion of either one or two lines of impurities. These impurity lines of atoms are placed in rows labeled as n (n=1, 2, 3, …), where n=1 is the free edge. The localized defect modes associated with these impurities are studied analytically and numerically within a tridiagonal matrix formalism. Fano resonances due to coupled magnetoexciton and continuum states in bulk semiconductors

We have observed Fano resonances in linear absorption experiments on GaAs under a magnetic field. In a bulk semiconductor in a magnetic field, Fano interference is the result of the coupling of higher-order magnetoexcitons and energetically degenerate one-dimensional continuum states. We show that these experimental findings can be described by the model of a two-band semiconductor in the effective-mass approximation. Numerical calculations of the linear magnetoabsorption are presented that demonstrate that the coupling between magnetoexcitons and continuum states is due to Coulomb interaction.

Stationary localized states due to a nonlinear dimeric impurity embedded in a perfect one-dimensional chain

The formation of stationary localized states due to a power law nonlinear dimeric impurity embedded in a perfect one-dimensional chain is studied here using the appropriate discrete nonlinear Schr{umlt o}dinger equation. A proper ansatz is introduced in the appropriate Hamiltonian to obtain the reduced effective Hamiltonian. The Hamiltonian contains a parameter, {beta}={phi}{sub 1}/{phi}{sub 0}, which is the ratio of stationary amplitudes at impurity sites. Relevant equations for localized states are obtained from the fixed point of the reduced dynamical system. General continuum model for twisted bilayer graphene and arbitrary smooth deformations

We present a simple derivation of a continuum Hamiltonian for bilayer graphene with an arbitrary smooth lattice deformation – technically in a fashion parametrized by displacement fields with small gradients. We show that this subsumes the continuum model of Bistritzer and Macdonald for twisted bilayer graphene as well as many generalizations and extensions of it. The derivation is carried out entirely in real space.
