We have calculated the lifetimes of the two-neutrino and neutrinoless double-positron decay, K-capture, and KK-capture processes for several nuclei. It is found that the two-neutrino KK-capture process is a dominant channel with a lifetime of 10/sup 23/--10/sup 24/ yr, whereas the neutrinoless processes have lifetimes greater than 10/sup 27/yr if the currently accepted upper limits on the lepton-number-violation parameters are used.

Neutrinoless double-{beta} decay in the microscopic interacting boson model

We present a formalism for calculating nuclear matrix elements of double-{beta} decay within the framework of the microscopic interacting boson model. We calculate Fermi, Gamow-Teller, and tensor matrix elements in the decay of Ge-Se-Mo-Te-Xe-Nd-Sm and compare our results with those of the shell-model (SM) and of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA). Our results are in agreement with QRPA. We discuss simple features of the matrix elements and give a formula that allows one to estimate matrix elements in terms of the number of valence proton and neutron pairs.

Higgs-boson-mediated neutrinoless double-. beta. decay and neutrino mass in a Majoron model

We propose a simple extension of the standard model in which the neutrinoless double-..beta.. decay is a tree-level effect mediated by Higgs bosons and the neutrino mass begins to appear in the two-loop diagrams. The model also contains a massless Majoron, i.e., the Goldstone boson of the global symmetry of the lepton number, which is spontaneously broken at a scale close to that of the electroweak interaction. No unnaturally huge or tiny new scales are evoked. The Majoron coupling to the fermions is also two-loop suppressed.
