Tensile strain-induced magnetism transition in multilayer graphene with excess electrons: Stability of the edge-quantum well

The stability of edge-quantum well-induced strong magnetism of multilayer armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR) with excess electrons was investigated under applied tensile strain by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results indicated that: (1) The strain along the armchair edge direction led to a transition of the multilayer AGNRs from ferromagnetic state to nonmagnetic state when the strain increased to a critical value; (2) The strain induced bond length changes reduced the stability of the edge-quantum well in terms of the reduction of the electrons capturing capacity; and (3) The spin splitting of the energy bands near the Fermi level reducedmore »« less

The effects of tensile strain on the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of hydrogenated-edge armchair graphene nanoribbons are investigated by using DFT theory. The strain is introduced in two different ways related to the two types of systems studied in this work: in-plane strained systems (A) and out-of-plane strained systems due to bending (B). Intrinsic spin dependent and ferromagnetic stability on edge saturated zigzag graphene-like carbon-nitride nanoribbons

Using first-principles calculations, we have investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of zigzag graphene-like carbon-nitride nanoribbons (Zg-CNNRs) with mono- and dihydrogen-terminated edges asymmetrically. The results demonstrate that spin-down channel completely dominates the states adjacent Fermi level, which is an intrinsic feature and can be accounted for the valence band maximum derived from the nonbonding N-(p{sub x},p{sub y}) orbitals, instead of the bonding C/N-p{sub z} π state. Importantly, ferromagnetic ordering is found to be preferred and the magnetism is entirely localized on the N sites of saturated edge due to its stronger electronegativity. Abstract Graphene‐based materials have been widely studied to overcome the hurdles of Li–S batteries, but suffer from low adsorptivity to polar polysulfide species, slow mass transport of Li ⁺ ions, and severe irreversible agglomeration. Herein, via a one‐step scalable calcination process, a holey Fe, N codoped graphene (HFeNG) is successfully synthesized to address these problems.
