A period of slow contraction with equation of state w>1, known as an ekpyrotic phase, has been shown to flatten and smooth the universe if it begins the phase with small perturbations. In this paper, we explore how robust and powerful the ekpyrotic smoothing mechanism is by beginning with highly inhomogeneous and anisotropic initial conditions and numerically solving for the subsequent evolution of the universe. Toy model for decoherence in the black hole information problem

We investigate a plausible route to resolving the black hole information paradox by examining the effects of decoherence on Hawking radiation. In particular, we show that a finite but nonzero rate of decoherence can lead to efficient extraction of information from the evaporating black hole. This effectively pushes the paradox from becoming manifest at the Page time when the black hole has evaporated to half its size, to a timescale solely determined by the rate of decoherence. Tunable phase gate for two atoms with an immunity to decoherence

A scheme is presented for realizing a tunable phase gate for two atoms. The scheme is based on atom-cavity interaction and linear optics elements. In comparison with previous schemes, the distinct advantage is that the fidelity of the gate is not affected by the atomic spontaneous emission, cavity decay, and imperfection of the photodetectors, which is important for implementing high-fidelity quantum gates under realistic conditions.

Decoherence induced by a phase-damping reservoir

A phase damping reservoir composed by N-bosons coupled to a system of interest through a cross-Kerr interaction is proposed and its effects on quantum superpositions are investigated. By means of analytical calculations we show that: (i) the reservoir induces a Gaussian decay of quantum coherences, and (ii) the inherent incommensurate character of the spectral distribution yields irreversibility. A state-independent decoherence time and a master equation are both derived analytically.
