Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) has been studied for ferrimagnetic antiperovskite Mn{sub 4−x}Dy{sub x}N films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. The introduction of Dy changes the AHE dramatically, even changes its sign, while the variations in magnetization are negligible. Two sign reversals of the AHE (negative-positive-negative) are ascribed to the variation of charge carriers as a result of Fermi surface reconstruction. We further demonstrate that the AHE current J{sub AH} is dissipationless (independent of the scattering rate), by confirming that anomalous Hall conductivity, σ{sub AH}, is proportional to the carrier density n at 5 K. Magnetic properties of low-moment ferrimagnetic Heusler Cr₂CoGa thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy

Recently, theorists have predicted many materials with a low magnetic moment and large spin-polarization for spintronic applications. These compounds are predicted to form in the inverse Heusler structure; however, many of these compounds have been found to phase segregate. In this study, ordered Cr₂CoGa thin films were synthesized without phase segregation using molecular beam epitaxy. The present as-grown films exhibit a low magnetic moment from antiferromagnetically coupled Cr and Co atoms as measured with superconducting quantum interface device magnetometry and soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Electrical measurements demonstrated a thermally-activated semiconductor-like resistivity component with an activation energy of 87 meV.more »« less

Metallic transport and large anomalous Hall effect at room temperature in ferrimagnetic Mn{sub 4}N epitaxial thin film

We report the electrical transport properties of ferrimagnetic Mn{sub 4}N (001) epitaxial thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on MgO (001) substrates. The Mn{sub 4}N thin films were tetragonally distorted with a ratio of out-of-plane to in-plane lattice constants of 0.987 and showed perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with an effective magnetic anisotropy constant of 0.16 MJ/m{sup 3}, which is comparable with that of a recently reported molecular-beam-epitaxy-grown film. The thin films exhibited metallic transport with a room temperature resistivity of 125 μΩ cm in addition to a large anomalous Hall effect with a Hall angle tangent of 0.023.

Room temperature ferrimagnetism and ferroelectricity in strained, thin films of BiFe_0.5Mn _0.5O₃

In this study, highly strained films of BiFe_0.5Mn_0.5O₃ (BFMO) grown at very low rates by pulsed laser deposition were demonstrated to exhibit both ferrimagnetism and ferroelectricity at room temperature and above. Magnetization measurements demonstrated ferrimagnetism (T_C ~ 600K), with a room temperature saturation moment (M_S) of up to 90 emu/cc (~0.58μ_B/f.u) on high quality (001) SrTiO₃. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism showed that the ferrimagnetism arose from antiferromagnetically coupled Fe³⁺ and Mn³⁺ . Interface-dependent magnetotransport properties for thin Pt films on ferrimagnetic Y{sub 3}Fe{sub 5}O{sub 12}

We have studied magnetoresistance and Hall effects for 1.8-nm-thick Pt films grown on a ferrimagnetic insulator Y{sub 3}Fe{sub 5}O{sub 12} in a wide temperature (0.46–300 K) and magnetic-field (−15 to 15 T) region. In the low-temperature regime where quantum corrections to conductivity are observed, weak antilocalization behavior observed in Pt films is critically suppressed when the film is attached to Y{sub 3}Fe{sub 5}O{sub 12}. Hall resistance in the Pt film is also affected by Y{sub 3}Fe{sub 5}O{sub 12}, and it exhibits logarithmic temperature dependence in a broad temperature range.
