Microscopic description of the pygmy dipole resonance and its contribution to radiative capture

The radiative capture cross sections for the compound nuclei {sup 100}Sn, {sup 132}Sn and {sup 144}Nd have been calculated using both self-consistent and non-selfconsistent microscopic theories which, in addition to the standard RPA or QRPA approaches, take the single-particle continuum and phonon coupling into account. We show that the inclusion of the phonon coupling is necessary for a proper description of the pygmy resonance. Consequently, the radiative capture cross sections and corresponding rates are increased by a factor of 2-3 as compared with RPA or QRPA approaches. Evidence for Pygmy and Giant Dipole Resonances in {sup 130}Sn and {sup 132}Sn

The dipole strength distribution above the one-neutron separation energy was measured in the unstable {sup 130}Sn and the double-magic {sup 132}Sn isotopes. The results were deduced from Coulomb dissociation of secondary Sn beams with energies around 500 MeV/nucleon, produced by in-flight fission of a primary {sup 238}U beam. In addition to the giant dipole resonance, a resonancelike structure ('pygmy resonance') is observed at a lower excitation energy around 10 MeV exhausting a few percent of the isovector E1 energy-weighted sum rule. The results are discussed in the context of a predicted new dipole mode of excess neutrons oscillating out ofmore » phase with the core nucleons.« less

Mode Coupling and the Pygmy Dipole Resonance in a Relativistic Two-Phonon Model

A new class of many-body models, based on covariant density functional theory for excited states, is presented. It allows a parameter free description of the fragmentation of nuclear states induced by mode coupling of two-quasiparticle and two-phonon configurations. As compared to earlier methods it provides a consistent and parameter free theory of the fine structure of nuclear resonances. The method is applied very successfully to investigate the newly discovered low-lying dipole excitations in Sn and Ni isotopes with large neutron excess.

Dynamical coupling of pygmy and giant resonances in relativistic Coulomb excitation

We study the Coulomb excitation of pygmy dipole resonances (PDR) in heavy ion reactions at 100 MeV/nucleon and above. The reactions Ni-68 + Au-197 and Ni-68 + Pb-208 are taken as practical examples. Our goal is to address the question of the influence of giant resonances on the PDR as the dynamics of the collision evolves. We show that the coupling to the giant resonances affects considerably the excitation probabilities of the PDR, a result that indicates the need of an improved theoretical treatment of the reaction dynamics at these bombarding energies.
