Geometry of higher-dimensional black hole thermodynamics

We investigate thermodynamic curvatures of the Kerr and Reissner-Nordstroem (RN) black holes in spacetime dimensions higher than four. These black holes possess thermodynamic geometries similar to those in four-dimensional spacetime. The thermodynamic geometries are the Ruppeiner geometry and the conformally related Weinhold geometry. The Ruppeiner geometry for a d=5 Kerr black hole is curved and divergent in the extremal limit. For a d{>=}6 Kerr black hole there is no extremality but the Ruppeiner curvature diverges where one suspects that the black hole becomes unstable. The François Massieu 1869 idea to derive some mechanical and thermal properties of physical systems from 'Characteristic Functions', was developed by Gibbs and Duhem in thermodynamics with the concept of potentials, and introduced by Poincaré in probability. A conventional Ingram-type mass spectrometer was adapted to permit the study of the polarity of high-temperature species by electric deflection methods. The molecule Li/sub 2/O was found to be nonpolar and therefore to have an equilibrium angle close to 180 deg , as shown by the absence of deflection of a molecular beam by an inhomogeneous electric field. The species LiO, which was found by Berkowitz, Chupka, Blue, and Margrave, was confirmed to form a small percentage of the vapor in equilibrium with solid Li/sub 2/O. (auth)

Although thermodynamic fluctuation theory originated from statistical mechanics, it may be put on a completely thermodynamic basis, in no essential need of any microscopic foundation. This review views the theory from the macroscopic perspective, emphasizing, in particular, notions of covariance and consistency, expressed naturally using the language of Riemannian geometry.
