We have calculated the binding energy, root-mean-square radius, and quadrupole deformation parameter for the recently synthesized superheavy element Z=117, using the axially deformed relativistic mean-field (RMF) model. The calculation is extended to various isotopes of the Z=117 element, starting from A=286 till A=310. We predict almost spherical structures in the ground state for almost all the isotopes. A shape transition appears at about A=292 from a prolate to an oblate shape structure of the Z=117 nucleus in our mean-field approach. Spectra of ..gamma.. rays from the reaction /sup 117/Sn(p, n..gamma..)/sup 117/Sb have been measured in an electrostatic accelerator in the region of the analog resonance with E/sub R/ = 4.491 MeV, J/sup ..pi../ = 0/sup +/, and GAMMA = 32 keV. The partial cross sections are analyzed in the resonance and outside it, the partial widths of direct neutron decay are determined, and the spectroscopic characteristics of the levels of the final nucleus /sup 117/Sb (the energies of the levels, J/sup ..pi../, and the ..gamma..-decay branching ratio) have been obtained more accurately. The heaviest isotopes of elements Z=117 to Z=105, {sup 294}117, {sup 293}117, {sup 290}115, {sup 289}115, {sup 286}113, {sup 285}113, {sup 282}Rg, {sup 281}Rg, {sup 278}Mt, {sup 274}Bh, and {sup 270}Db, were identified by means of the Dubna gas-filled recoil separator among the products of the {sup 249}Bk + {sup 48}Ca reaction. The details of the observed six decay chains, indicating the production and decay of isotopes {sup 293}117 and {sup 294}117, are presented and discussed.
