Magnetic excitations in an itinerant electron antiferromagnet Cr/sub 2/As

Spin wave excitations in an itinerant electron antiferromagnet Cr/sub 2/As was measured using neutron spectroscopy. Magnon dispersion is linear to the reciprocal lattice vector for small q, and the slope is 125 and 185 MeV A along c- and a-axis, respectively. The slope is about two times larger than the value predicted from the molecular field theory.

Observation of itinerant-electron effects on the magnetic excitations of iron

Triple-axis neutron spectroscopy has been used to study high-energy magnetic excitations for iron. The scattering contours established for the (100) and (111) directions show effects not present in localized-electron models of ferromagnetism. Interactions between spin waves and single-particle excitations are clearly seen for both crystallographic directions while two parts to the spin-wave branch are observed for the (100) direction.

The combination of electronic correlations and Fermi surfaces with multiple nesting vectors can lead to the appearance of complex multi-Q magnetic ground states, hosting unusual states such as chiral density waves and quantum Hall insulators. Distinguishing single-Q and multi-Q magnetic phases is however a notoriously difficult experimental problem. Here we propose theoretically that the local density of states (LDOS) near a magnetic impurity, whose orientation may be controlled by an external magnetic field, can be used to map out the detailed magnetic configuration of an itinerant system and distinguish unambiguously between single-Q and multi-Q phases. A trajectory method of calculating tunneling probabilities from phase integrals along straight line tunneling paths, originally suggested by Makri and Miller [J. Chem. Phys. 91, 4026 (1989)] and recently implemented by Truhlar and co-workers [Chem. Sci. 5, 2091 (2014)], is tested for one- and two-dimensional ab initio based potentials describing hydrogen dissociation in the {sup 1}B{sub 1} excited electronic state of pyrrole. Electron tunneling study of superconductors doped with magnetic atoms and nonmagnetic resonant state atoms: indium-chromium, zinc-manganese, and aluminum-manganese

Electron tunneling measurements were used to determine the density of states of quench-condensed thin films of In-Cr, Zn-Mn, and Al-Mn, and of annealed thin films of Zn-Mn. The results on In-Cr and Zn-Mn were compared with Shiba's theory for magnetic atoms in superconductors. The localized band of states predicted to form in the energy gap of such alloys was observed, though the observed band was broader than that predicted. The annealed samples of Zn-Mn showed a narrower band than did the quench-condensed samples. Reasonable agreement with Shiba's theory was found if s, p, and d wave scattering were included.
