Cold Fermionic Atoms in Two-Dimensional Traps: Pairing versus Hund's Rule

The microscopic properties of few interacting cold fermionic atoms confined in a two-dimensional (2D) harmonic trap are studied by numerical diagonalization. For repulsive interactions, a strong shell structure dominates, with Hund's rule acting at its extreme for the midshell configurations. In the attractive case, odd-even oscillations due to pairing occur simultaneously with deformations in the internal structure of the ground states, as seen from pair correlation functions.

Thermodynamic properties of two-component fermionic atoms trapped in a two-dimensional optical lattice

We study the finite-temperature properties of two-component fermionic atoms trapped in a two-dimensional (2D) optical lattice. We apply the self-energy functional approach to the 2D Hubbard model with a harmonic-trapping potential, and systematically investigate the thermodynamic properties of this system. We find that entropy and grand potential provide evidence of a crossover between the Mott-insulating and the metallic phases at certain temperatures. In addition, we find that entropy exhibits a cusplike anomaly at lower temperatures, suggesting a second- or higher-order antiferromagnetic transition. We estimate the antiferromagnetic transition temperatures, and clarify how the trapping potential affects this magnetic transition.

Pairing in two-dimensional boson-fermion mixtures

The possibilities of pairing in two-dimensional boson-fermion mixtures are carefully analyzed. It is shown that the boson-induced attraction between two identical fermions dominates the p wave pairing at low density. For a given fermion density, the pairing gap becomes maximal at a certain optimal boson concentration. The conditions for observing pairing in current experiments are discussed.

Possible diminution of impurity pair breaking for triplet pairing superconductivity in two-dimensional or quasi-two-dimensional, weakly localized, nearly magnetic systems

We propose a conjecture according to which, as a consequence of weak localization in two-dimensional, nearly magnetic itinerant paramagnets, the pair-breaking parameter due to normal impurity scattering, in triplet pairing superconductivity, may be reduced at low enough temperature. It might then, in principle, become easier to observe triplet pairing superconductivity in dirty two-dimensional or quasi-two-dimensional metals, than in three-dimensional ones; thus some recently observed puzzling superconductive behaviors should be reexamined.

Qualitative analysis of magnetic waveguides for two-dimensional Dirac fermions

We focus on the confinement of two-dimensional Dirac fermions within the waveguides created by realistic magnetic fields. Understanding of their band structure is of our main concern. We provide easily applicable criteria, mostly depending only on the asymptotic behavior of the magnetic field, that can guarantee existence or absence of the energy bands and provide valuable insight into the systems where analytical solution is impossible. The general results are employed in specific systems where the waveguide is created by the magnetic field of a set of electric wires or magnetized strips.
