We use the finite-size, density-matrix-renormalization-group (FSDMRG) method to obtain the phase diagram of the one-dimensional (d=1) extended Bose-Hubbard model for density {rho}=1 in the U-V plane, where U and V are, respectively, onsite and nearest-neighbor interactions. The phase diagram comprises three phases: superfluid (SF), Mott insulator (MI), and mass-density-wave (MDW). For small values of U and V, we get a reentrant SF-MI-SF phase transition. For intermediate values of interactions the SF phase is sandwiched between MI and MDW phases with continuous SF-MI and SF-MDW transitions. Local states in one-dimensional CDW (charge density wave) materials: Spectral signatures for polarons and bipolarons in MX chains

We have undertaken a combined theoretical and experimental effort directed toward the examination of both the ground and defect states in halide-bridged mixed-valence metal linear chains materials as they are tuned within and between broken symmetry phases. Novel low-dimensional highly correlated electronic materials offer a difficult theoretical challenge as we must span from a description of electronic structure on a molecular scale to the meso scale structure that is intrinsic to these solids. Our theoretical effort at Los Alamos combines quantum chemistry, band structure calculations, and many body modeling using Peierls-Hubbard Hamiltonians in order to model ground and local states.more »« less

Voltage-induced metal-insulator transition in a one-dimensional charge density wave

Here, we present a theoretical investigation of the voltage-driven metal insulator transition based on solving coupled Boltzmann and Hartree-Fock equations to determine the insulating gap and the electron distribution in a model system – a one dimensional charge density wave. Electric fields that are parametrically small relative to energy gaps can shift the electron distribution away from the momentum-space region where interband relaxation is efficient, leading to a highly non-equilibrium quasiparticle distribution even in the absence of Zener tunneling. The gap equation is found to have regions of multistability; a non-equilibrium analog of the free energy is constructed and usedmore » to determine which phase is preferred.« less

Density fluctuations of a hard-core Bose gas in a one-dimensional lattice near the Mott insulating phase

The characteristic oscillations of the density-density correlation function and the resulting structure factor are studied for a hard-core Bose gas in a one-dimensional lattice. Their wavelength diverges as the system undergoes a continuous transition from an incommensurate to a Mott insulating phase. The transition is associated with a unit static structure factor and a vanishing sound velocity. The qualitative picture is unchanged when a weak confining potential is applied to the system.

Charge-transfer absorption in a dimerized one-dimensional Mott-Hubbard insulator

We investigate interband absorption in dimerized one-dimensional Mott-Hubbard insulators, such as some charge-transfer organic salts, using the Hubbard Hamiltonian. The line-shape function is obtained for the antiferromagnetic ground state by exactly summing to infinite order the moments generated by all possible excursions of the particle and the hole in a projected particle-hole space. The effect of spin disordering is also discussed in terms of a numerical evaluation of moments. It is found that the interband absorption arises from transitions to a sharp intradimer excitonic state as well as to extended band states. The former tends to dominate as the dimerizationmore » increases.« less
