Twofold symmetry of proximity-induced superconductivity in ${Bi}_{2} {Te}_{3} / {Bi}_{2} {Sr}_{2} {CaCu}_{2} O_{8 + δ}$ heterostructures revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy

We observe proximity-induced superconductivity in in situ prepared heterostructures constructed by topological insulator Bi₂Te₃ thin films and high-temperature cuprate superconductors Bi₂Sr₂ CaCu₂O_8+δ. The superconducting gap maximum is about 7.6 meV on the surface of Bi₂Te₃ thin films with a thickness of two quintuple layers, and the gap value decreases with an increase in the film thickness. Moreover, the quasiparticle interference data show clear evidence of a twofold symmetric superconducting gap with gap minima along one pair of the principal crystalline axes of Bi₂Te₃. This gap form is consistent with the Δ_4y notation of the topological superconductivity proposed in such systems.more »« less

Universal scaling of length, time, and energy for cuprate superconductors based on photoemission measurements of Bi $_{2}$ Sr $_{2}$ CaCu $_{2}$ O $_{8 + δ}$

A microscopic scaling relation linking the normal and superconducting states of the cuprates in the presence of a pseudogap is presented using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. This scaling relation, complementary to the bulk universal scaling relation embodied by Homes’ law, explicitly connects the momentum-dependent amplitude of the d -wave superconducting order parameter at T ~ 0 to quasiparticle scattering mechanisms operative at T ≳ T c . The form of the scaling is proposed to be a consequence of the marginal Fermi-liquid phenomenology and the inherently strong dissipation of the normal pseudogap state of the cuprates.

We developed novel techniques to fabricate atomically thin Bi_2.1Sr_1.9CaCu_2.0O_8+δ van der Waals heterostructures down to two unit cells while maintaining a transition temperature T_c close to the bulk, and carry out magnetotransport measurements on these van der Waals devices. We find a double sign change of the Hall resistance E-xy as in the bulk system, spanning both below and above T_c . Further, we observe a drastic enlargement of the region of sign reversal in the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram with decreasing thickness of the device.
