Lifetimes of high-spin states in /sup 157,158,159/Er have been measured following the reaction /sup 128/Te(/sup 34/S,xn) induced by 155-MeV /sup 34/S ions. A Doppler-shift recoil-distance device was used and ..gamma..-..gamma.. coincidences were recorded between five germanium detectors at 90/sup 0/ to the beam direction and a Compton-suppressed Ge detector at 0/sup 0/ to record the shifted and unshifted ..gamma..-ray peaks. The results for the ground band of /sup 158/Er clearly show increasing collectivity with spin, an effect probably arising from centrifugal stretching for this N = 90 nucleus. Various methods for determining the decay energy of isotopes subjected to electron capture are discussed. The method of L/K was found tc be suitable for small energy transitions (< 200 kev) of isotopes with relatively simple decay schemes and having no strong cascade gamma radiation. The method has limitations due to incomplete K-capture theory and incomplete data on quantitative and qualitative regularities in the atomic shell electron reconstruction process. High-spin structure in {sup 157}Er up to and above band termination

The high-spin structure of {sup 157}Er has been greatly expanded using the Gammasphere spectrometer to investigate the {sup 114}Cd({sup 48}Ca,5n) reaction at 215 MeV. Many new transitions have been placed in a greatly augmented level scheme up to spin 40({Dirac_h}/2{pi}) with many collective rotational sequences established. With increasing angular momentum, this nucleus undergoes a Coriolis-induced shape transition from a deformed state of collective rotation to a noncollective configuration. This transition manifests itself as favored band termination near I=45({Dirac_h}/2{pi}) in three rotational structures. Many weakly populated states lying at high excitation energy that decay into the terminating states have been discovered.more »« less
