The Fe/MgO magnetic tunnel junction is a classic spintronic system, with current importance technologically and interest for future innovation. The key magnetic properties are linked directly to the structure of hard-to-access buried interfaces, and the Fe and MgO components near the surface are unstable when exposed to air, making a deeper probing, nondestructive, in-situ measurement ideal for this system. Atomic-layer-resolved composition and electronic structure of the cuprate $B i_{2} S r_{2} CaC u_{2} O_{8 + δ}$ from soft x-ray standing-wave photoemission

A major remaining challenge in the superconducting cuprates is the unambiguous differentiation of the composition and electronic structure of the CuO₂ layers and those of the intermediate layers. The large c axis for these materials permits employing soft x-ray (930.3 eV) standing wave (SW) excitation in photoemission that yields atomic layer-by-layer depth resolution of these properties. Applying SW photoemission to Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8+δ yields the depth distribution of atomic composition and the layer-resolved densities of states. Structural characterization of interfaces in epitaxial Fe/MgO/Fe magnetic tunnel junctions by transmission electron microscopy

We present a detailed structural characterization of the interfaces in Fe/MgO/Fe layers grown by molecular-beam epitaxy using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning TEM, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. When fabricated into magnetic tunnel junctions, these epitaxial devices exhibit large tunnel magnetoresistance ratios (e.g., 318% at 10 K), though still considerably lower than the values predicted theoretically. The reason for this discrepancy is being debated and has been attributed to the structure of, and defects at the interface, namely, the relative position of the atoms, interface oxidation, strain, and structural asymmetry of the interfaces. Dependency of tunneling magneto-resistance on Fe insertion-layer thickness in Co{sub 2}Fe{sub 6}B{sub 2}/MgO-based magnetic tunneling junctions

For Co{sub 2}Fe{sub 6}B{sub 2}/MgO-based perpendicular magnetic tunneling junctions spin valves with [Co/Pd]{sub n}-synthetic-antiferromagnetic (SyAF) layers, the tunneling-magneto-resistance (TMR) ratio strongly depends on the nanoscale Fe insertion-layer thickness (t{sub Fe}) between the Co{sub 2}Fe{sub 6}B{sub 2} pinned layer and MgO tunneling barrier. The TMR ratio rapidly increased as t{sub Fe} increased up to 0.4 nm by improving the crystalline linearity of a MgO tunneling barrier and by suppressing the diffusion of Pd atoms from a [Co/Pd]{sub n}-SyAF.
