A theoretical model is presented for the probability distribution of wave crest amplitudes in severe seas states with wave breaking. As the severity of a sea state increases, nonlinearities cause an increase in the amplitudes of the largest wave crests with a subsequent modification of the distribution of wave crest amplitudes from the linear Rayleigh theory. In this paper, a theory for the probabilities of these nonlinear crest amplitudes is first reviewed based on earlier work. Whistler waves are launched from an electric dipole of length L in a large-volume laboratory plasma. With increasing wave amplitude the radiation pattern narrows and finally forms a duct of diameter dapprox. =Lapprox. =lambda/ sub perpendicular/. The ducted waves propagate nearly undamped. The observed nonlinear effects are explained by wave-particle interactions.

Previous work on axisymmetric shock solutions in hybrid model flows is extended to the case when the shocks are nonaxisymmetric. The properties of the sonic surface as well as the shocks are characterized analytically.
