Focusing and defocusing of neutral atomic beams using resonance-radiation pressure

We demonstrate strong focusing and defocusing of a sodium atomic beam using the transverse resonance-radiation pressure of a superimposed cw dye laser beam tuned near the atomic resonance. Focal spot diameters of about 60 ..mu..m and a 30-fold increase of the on-axis atomic beam intensity have been obtained. For defocusing, the on-axis intensity can be reduced to less than 10/sup -2/ of its original value.

Ion-end-loss rate for rf-plugged mirrors and its application to electrostatically plugged mirrors

Improvement of plasma confinement attributed to both ion heating and quasipotential is experimentally investigated by imposing rf electric fields with the ion-cyclotron range of frequency near both ends and one end of a minimum-{ital B} mirror, respectively. An expression of the ion-end-loss rate for rf-plugged mirrors is compared with the experimental results for one-end plugging by the quasipotential. The expression agrees with a Pastukhov for large potentials. The same expression applied to end losses from electrostatically plugged mirrors shows a good fit to the Fokker--Planck and Monte Carlo code results within the accuracies for both plug potential and mirror ratiomore »« less

Fast Neutral Generation by Charge Exchange Reaction and Its Effect on Neutron Production Rate in Inertial Electrostatic Confinement Fusion Systems

Fast neutral generation by charge exchange reaction in inertial electrostatic confinement plasmas is studied by solving the Poisson equation and the Boltzmann equation for fast neutrals. Fusion reactions carried by the charge exchange fast neutrals become appreciable compared with ion-background fusion reaction. It is shown that the fusion reaction between fast neutral and background gas is sensitively affected by experimental parameters (grid voltage, background gas pressure) and ion distribution function.
AN ELECTROSTATICALLY COMPENSATED, NULL DEFLECTION ELECTRON BEAM PROBE FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF DISCHARGE ELECTRIC FIELDS

Employing a combination of well-known techniques, an electrostatically compensated, null deflection electron beam probe technique has been developed capable of mieasuring electric field strengths varying from 1000 to 5 v cm/sup -1/ . The limitations of this technique are discussed. This probe was used to investigate the field distortion occurring during the transition from a Townsend to a glow discharge. (auth)

Small electrostatic retarding field energy analyzer with compensating differentiation circuit

A small electrostatic retarding field energy analyzer is constructed in order to measure locally the ion energy distribution functions parallel and perpendicular to a magnetic field. A compensating differentiation circuit enables it to yield the energy distributions clearly in spite of the smallness of the signal available in a low-density plasma. An application is performed to reveal local anisotropic heating due to a plasma instability.
