Here, we have carried out inelastic neutron scattering experiments to study magnetic excitations in the ordered double perovskite Ca₂FeReO₆. We have found a well-defined magnon mode with a bandwidth of ~50 meV below the ferrimagnetic ordering temperature (T_c ~ 520 K), similar to the previously studied Ba₂FeReO₆. The spin excitation is gapless for most temperatures within the magnetically ordered phase. However, a spin gap of ~10 meV opens up below ~150 K, which is well below the magnetic ordering temperature but coincides with a previously reported metal-insulator transition and onset of structural distortion. Interplay between spin-orbit coupling and strong correlation effects: Comparison of the three osmate double perovskites Ba₂AOsO₆(A=Na, Ca, Y)

High formal valence Os-based double perovskites are a focus of current interest because they display strong interplay of large spin-orbit coupling and strong electronic correlation. Here we present the electronic and magnetic characteristics of a sequence of three cubic Os based double perovskites Ba₂AOsO₆ (A=Na, Ca, Y), with formal valences of Os⁺⁷(d¹),Os⁺⁶(d²), and Os⁺⁵(d³). For these first principles based calculations we apply an “exact exchange for correlated electrons” functional, with exact exchange applied in a hybrid fashion solely to the Os (5d) states. Spin gaps in the ordered states of ${La}_{2} Li X O_{6} (X = Ru, Os)$ and their relation to the distortion of the cubic double perovskite structure in $4 d^{3}$ and $5 d^{3}$ magnets

Time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been carried out on polycrystalline samples of the 4d³ and 5d³ double pervoskite antiferromagnets La₂LiRuO₆ and La₂LiOsO₆. These reveal the development of an inelastic spin gap in La₂LiRuO₆ and La₂LiOsO₆ of ~1.8(8) and 6(1) meV, below their respective ordering temperatures TN, ~23.8 and 30 K. The bandwidths of the spin excitations are shown to be ~5.7(9)and12(1)meV, respectively, at low temperatures. Spin gaps are surprising in such magnets as the t_2g levels of Ru⁵⁺ or Os⁵⁺ are expected to be half-filled, resulting in an anticipated orbital singlet for both materials. Partial photoionization cross sections for Hg between 600 and 250 Å. Effect of spin-orbit coupling on the ²D_5/2/²D_3/2 branching ratio of Hg

By means of photoelectron spectroscopy, we have measured the branching ratios for production of the ²S_1/2, ²D_5/2, and ²D_3/2 states of Hg⁺ by photoionization of Hg in the wavelength range 600-250 Å. These branching ratios are combined with earlier measurements of the total photoionization cross section to produce partial photoionization cross sections for the above processes. The wavelength dependence of the ²D_5/2/²D_3/2 branching ratio exhibits a systematic deviation relative to the statistical value of 3:2. We present the spin-orbit (SO) and Renner-Teller (RT) quantum dynamics of the spin-forbidden quenching O({sup 1}D) + N{sub 2}(X{sup 1}{Sigma}{sub g}{sup +}){yields}O({sup 3}P) + N{sub 2}(X{sup 1}{Sigma}{sub g}{sup +}) on the N{sub 2}O X-tilde{sup 1}A{sup '}, a-tilde{sup 3}A', and b-tilde{sup 3}A{sup '} coupled PESs.
