A new material of nominal stoichiometry YGaMnO{sub 5} has been prepared in polycrystalline form from citrate precursors followed by thermal treatments under high-oxygen pressure. This compound has been characterized from neutron powder diffraction (NPD) data and magnetic measurements. For comparison, the parent compound YMn{sub 2}O{sub 5} has also been synthesized and its crystal structure refined by NPD data. Effect of Al{sup 3+} substitution on the structural, magnetic, and electric properties in multiferroic Bi{sub 2}Fe{sub 4}O{sub 9} ceramics

Structural, magnetic, and electric properties have been investigated in polycrystalline Bi{sub 2}(Fe{sub 1−x}Al{sub x}){sub 4}O{sub 9} (0≤x≤0.25) ceramics synthesized by a modified Pechini method. Structural analysis reveals that Al{sup 3+} doped Bi{sub 2}Fe{sub 4}O{sub 9} crystallizes in orthorhombic structure with Pbnm space group. Surface morphology of the end products is examined by scanning electron microscopy and the grain size has a tendency to decrease with increase in Al{sup 3+} doping level. Compared with pure Bi{sub 2}Fe{sub 4}O{sub 9}, room temperature coexistent multiferroic-like behavior is observed in Al{sup 3+} doped Bi{sub 2}Fe{sub 4}O{sub 9}. Observation of Electronic Ferroelectric Polarization in Multiferroic YMn(2)O(5)

We report the observation of a magnetic polarization of the O 2p states in YMn{sub 2}O{sub 5} through the use of soft x-ray resonant scattering at the oxygen K edge. Remarkably, we find that the temperature dependence of the integrated intensity of this signal closely follows the macroscopic electric polarization, and hence is proportional to the ferroelectric order parameter. This is in contrast with the temperature dependence observed at the Mn L{sub 3} edge, which reflects the Mn magnetic order parameter.
