The structure, determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, is monoclinic, space group P2{sub 1}/c, Z = 4, with a = 10.695(6) {angstrom}, b = 6.320(4) {angstrom}, c = 10.3228(6) {angstrom}, {beta} = 117.80(4){degree}, V = 617.5(9) {angstrom}{sup 3}, R{sub 1} = 0.039, wR{sub 2} = 0.101 for Na{sub 2}Gd{sub 2}(BO{sub 3}){sub 2}O. Rare-Earths Centers (Sm{sup 3+}, Eu{sup 3+}, Yb{sup 3+}) in MeF{sub 2}(Me = Ca, Sr, Ba, Cd) Crystals

Rare-earth elements RE{sup 3+}(RE = Sm, Eu, Yb) form impurity centers in fluorite-like crystals MeF{sub 2}(Me = Ca, Sr, Ba, Cd). The crystal structure of cubic, trigonal and tetragonal centers in MeF{sub 2} has been investigated in the framework of shell model and pair potential approximation. The crystal field parameters were calculated with the exchange charges model, using the optimized geometry of the doped host matrix. With these parameters we have been calculated the optical spectra and spin-Hamiltonian (g-factors) of RE{sup 3+} in MeF{sub 2}, for some combination of R{sup 3+} and MeF{sup 2}. Charge transfer excitation of trivalent rare earth ions Sm/sup 3+/, Eu/sup 3+/, Gd/sup 3+/, Ho/sup 3+/, Er/sup 3+/ and Yb/sup 3+/ emission in BaFCl crystals

The charge transfer type excitation spectra of trivalent rare earth ions Sm/sup 3+/, Eu/sup 3+/, Gd/sup 3+/, Ho/sup 3+/, Er/sup 3+/ and Yb/sup 3+/ emission in BaFCl crystals have been studied. The charge transfer type emissions of Ho/sup 3+/, Er/sup 3+/ and Yb/sup 3+/ in BaFCl have also been observed in addition to that of Eu/sup 3+/. The energy of charge transfer band of these RE/sup 3+/ ions were estimated experimentally and also calculated by Jorgensen's refined electron spin-pairing energy theory. Both the experimental and calculated values coincide well.

Paramagnetic resonance of Gd/sup 3 +/ as a probe of exchange and crystal-field effects in rare-earth-metal pnictides: Antiferromagnetic and diluted materials

We have extended the previous study of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of dilute Gd/sup 3 +/ impurities in Van Vleck paramagnets to study related antiferromagnetic compounds. The host systems studied are the terbium monopnictides and the cerium monopnictides. We have studied both pure host systems and systems with the host rare-earth metal diluted with yttrium. Since the Gd/sup 3 +/ EPR linewidths are often substantial compared to the resonance field, we have included the antiresonance (negative-frequency) effect in the analysis.
