The single-neutron properties of the N=83 nucleus {sup 137}Xe have been studied using the {sup 136}Xe(d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics at a beam energy of 10 MeV/u. The helical-orbit spectrometer, HELIOS, at Argonne National Laboratory was used to analyze the outgoing protons, achieving an excitation-energy resolution of {approx}100 keV. Extraction of absolute cross sections, angular distributions, and spectroscopic factors has led to a more complete understanding of the single-neutron strength in {sup 137}Xe. In particular, the centroids of the {nu}h{sub 9/2} and {nu}i{sub 13/2} strengths appear to evolve through the N=83 isotones in a manner consistent with the action ofmore » the tensor force.« less

The nu 0h(9/2) and nu 0i(13/2) strength at Xe-137, a single neutron outside the N = 82 shell closure, has been determined using the Xe-136(alpha, He-3)Xe-137 reaction carried out at 100 MeV. We confirm the recent observation of the second 13/2(+) state and reassess previous data on the 9/2(-) states, obtaining spectroscopic factors. These new data provide additional constraints on predictions of the same single-neutron excitations at Sn-133.

Decay of mass-separated /sup 136/I to levels in the N = 82 nucleus /sup 136/Xe including neutron particle-hole states

A total of 142 ..gamma.. rays were observed in the decay of the 45- and 85-sec isomers of /sup 136/I using an on-line isotope separator system. Of these, 116 were placed in a level scheme for /sup 136/Xe consisting of 50 excited levels up to 6624 keV using results from Ge(Li) ..gamma.. singles and ..gamma gamma..-coincidence measurements. Our results are compared with results frem earlier decay and reaction experiments, and the levels below 2.8 MeV are compared with predictions of recent shell-model calculations. Strong ..beta.. population was observed to states above 3.5 MeV which are interpreted as neutron particle-hole states.
