Direct-geometry time-of-flight chopper neutron spectroscopy is instrumental in studying dynamics in liquid, powder, and single crystal systems. We report here that real-space techniques in optical imagery can be adapted to obtain reciprocal-space super resolution dispersion for phonon or magnetic excitations from single-crystal neutron spectroscopy measurements. The procedure to reconstruct super-resolution energy dispersion of excitations relies on an accurate determination of the momentum and energy-dependent point spread function and a dispersion correction technique inspired by an image disparity calculation technique commonly used in stereo imaging. Super-resolution energy spectra from neutron direct-geometry spectrometers

Neutron direct-geometry time-of-flight chopper spectroscopy is instrumental in studying fundamental excitations of vibrational and/or magnetic origin. We report here that techniques in super-resolution optical imagery (which is in real-space) can be adapted to enhance resolution and reduce noise for a neutron spectroscopy (an instrument for mapping excitations in reciprocal space). The procedure to reconstruct super-resolution energy spectra of phonon density of states relies on a realization of multiframe registration, accurate determination of the energy-dependent point spread function, asymmetric nature of instrument resolution broadening, and iterative reconstructions. Claims in the paper by Chatizidimitiou-Dreismann et al. [Phys. Rev. B 72, 054123 (2005)] that our analysis of the keV neutron scattering data is incorrect are shown to be wrong. Their analysis neglects the effect of the neutron attenuation in the relatively thick samples, thus creating an artificial anomaly of {approx}21% in the scattering intensity ratio of H{sub 2}O relative to that of D{sub 2}O.

Claims in a Comment by R. Moreh et al. [Phys. Rev. B 75, 057101 (2007)] that their analysis of the keV neutron scattering data is correct and yields conventional results are shown to be wrong. Here we show that accounting for the neutron attenuation in the relatively thick samples, but neglecting the strong anisotropic distribution of double scattered neutrons from protons, creates an artificial and faulty decrease of about 19% in the theoretically predicted scattering intensity ratio of H{sub 2}O relative to that of D{sub 2}O.

High energy inelastic neutron scattering from physisorbed hydrogen in cesium intercalated graphite

The inelastic neutron scattering from H{sub 2} in C{sub 24}Cs(H{sub 2}){sub {ital x}} has been measured at momentum transfers of 8{lt}{ital Q}{lt}22 A{sup {minus}1} as a function of filling, 0.5{lt}{ital x}{lt}2.0, and temperature from 20 to 150 K. The observed scattering approaches the limiting behavior predicted by the Impulse Approximation (IA) for molecular hydrogen for {ital Q}'s greater than 15 A{sup {minus}1} and is insensitive to the filling factor and temperature up to {ital kT}/{ital M}{approx}0.1, where {ital M} is the enthalpy of hydrogen sorption.
