An extension of the standard supersymmetric model, SU(2)/sub L/ x x U(1)/sub I//sub >3/R$ x U(1)/sub B//sub -//sub L/, motivated by superstrings and baryon-number conservation is analyzed. A possible pattern of supersymmetry breaking from E/sub 6/ and the phenomenological implications for such a model are studied. In particular it is found that the neutral currents restrict M/sub Z//sub '/greater than or equal to240 GeV. Constraints on the g-2 factor of the muon are also examined.

Non-Abelian duality and confinement: From N=2 to N=1 supersymmetric QCD

Recently, we discovered and discussed non-Abelian duality in the quark vacua of N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory with the U(N) gauge group and N{sub f} flavors (N{sub f}>N). Both theories from the dual pair support non-Abelian strings, which confine monopoles. Now we introduce an N=2-breaking deformation, a mass term {mu}A{sup 2} for the adjoint fields. Starting from a small deformation, we eventually make it large, which enforces complete decoupling of the adjoint fields. We show that the above non-Abelian duality fully survives in the limit of N=1 supersymmetric QCD (SQCD), albeit some technicalities change. Duality-symmetric supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in three dimensions

We formulate a duality-symmetric N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in three dimensions. Our field content is (A{sub {mu}}{sup I},{lambda}{sup I},{phi}{sup I}), where the index I is for the adjoint representation of an arbitrary gauge group G. Our Hodge duality symmetry is F{sub {mu}{nu}}{sup I}=+{epsilon}{sub {mu}{nu}}{sup {rho}D}{sub {rho}{phi}}{sup I}. Because of this relationship, the presence of two physical fields A{sub {mu}}{sup I} and {phi}{sup I} within the same N=1 supermultiplet poses no problem. We can couple this multiplet to another vector multiplet (C{sub {mu}}{sup I},{chi}{sup I};B{sub {mu}{nu}}{sup I}) with 1+1 physical degrees of freedom modulo dim G. Duality in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

These lectures provide an introduction to the behavior of strongly-coupled supersymmetric gauge theories. After a discussion of the effective Lagrangian in nonsupersymmetric and supersymmetric field theories, the author analyzes the qualitative behavior of the simplest illustrative models. These include supersymmetric QCD for N{sub f} < N{sub c}, in which the superpotential is generated nonperturbatively, N = 2 SU(2) Yang-Mills theory (the Seiberg-Witten model), in which the nonperturbative behavior of the effect coupling is described geometrically, and supersymmetric QCD for N{sub f} large, in which the theory illustrates a non-Abelian generalization of electric-magnetic duality. 75 refs., 12 figs.
