Topological superconductors as characterized by Majorana surface states have been actively searched for their significance in fundamental science and technological implication. The large spin-orbit coupling in Bi-Pd binaries has stimulated extensive investigations on the topological surface states in these superconducting compounds. Here we report a study of normal-state electronic structure in a centrosymmetric α-PdBi₂ within density functional theory calculations. By investigating the electronic structure from the bulk to slab geometries in this system, we predict for the first time that α-PdBi₂ can host orbital-dependent and asymmetric Rashba surface states near the Fermi energy. Critical state and low-field electrodynamics in LaO{sub 0.85}F{sub 0.15}FeAs superconductor polycrystals

The penetration of a weak magnetic field into LaO{sub 0.85}F{sub 0.15}FeAs polycrystalline superconductors is investigated using two mutually complementing techniques: measurement of the higher harmonics of nonlinear magnetization and the current-voltage characteristics. The dependences of the critical current density and resistivity on the temperature and magnetic field strength are determined. The results confirm the theory of the critical state in the low-field electrodynamics of a Josephson medium. The universality of this theoretical concept is demonstrated for a new class of ceramic superconductors.

Low-temperature vortex state of the high-[ital T][sub [ital c]] superconductor Bi[sub 2]Sr[sub 2]Ca[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 10] in high magnetic fields

We report detailed measurements of current-voltage characteristics for a Bi[sub 2]Sr[sub 2]Ca[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 10]/Ag tape immersed in liquid neon (27 K) and in liquid oxygen (54--90 K) as a function of applied magnetic field up to 17 T. It is found that the electric-field-versus-current-density ([ital E]-[ital J]) curves can be well described by the relation [ital E]/[ital J][similar to]exp[[minus]([ital J][sub 0]/[ital J])[sup [mu]]], where [ital J][sub 0] is a constant. The exponent [mu] at elevated temperature ([ital T][ge]54 K) is less than 0.9, and is inconsistent with the vortex-glass description, which predicts [mu][lt]1.
