Domain- and symmetry-transition origins of reduced nanosecond piezoelectricity in ferroelectric/dielectric superlattices

Complex-oxide superlattices (SLs) with atomic-scale periodicity have dynamical properties that are distinct from thin films of uniform composition. The origins of these properties are closely related to the dynamics of polarization domains and to field-driven changes in the symmetries resulting from interfacial coupling between different components. These dynamics are apparent at timescales from a few nanoseconds to several milliseconds in experiments probing the piezoelectricity of a ferroelectric/dielectric BaTiO{sub 3}(BTO)/CaTiO{sub 3} (CTO) SL using time-resolved x-ray microdiffraction. Thermal fluctuations of ferroelectric nanodomains in a ferroelectric-dielectric ${PbTiO}_{3} / {SrTiO}_{3}$ superlattice

Ferroelectric/dielectric superlattices consisting of alternating layers of ferroelectric PbTiO₃ and dielectric SrTiO₃ exhibit a disordered striped nanodomain pattern, with characteristic length scales of 6 nm for the domain periodicity and 30 nm for the in-plane coherence of the domain pattern. Spatial disorder in the domain pattern gives rise to coherent hard x-ray scattering patterns exhibiting intensity speckles. We show here that using variable-temperature Bragg-geometry x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) that x-ray scattering patterns from the disordered domains exhibit a continuous temporal decorrelation due to spontaneous domain fluctuations. The origin of the functional properties of complex oxide superlattices can be resolved using time-resolved synchrotron x-ray diffraction into contributions from the component layers making up the repeating unit. The CaTiO{sub 3} layers of a CaTiO{sub 3}/BaTiO{sub 3} superlattice have a piezoelectric response to an applied electric field, consistent with a large continuous polarization throughout the superlattice. The overall piezoelectric coefficient at large strains, 54 pm/V, agrees with first-principles predictions in which a tetragonal symmetry is imposed on the superlattice by the SrTiO{sub 3} substrate.

Optically Induced Picosecond Lattice Compression in the Dielectric Component of a Strongly Coupled Ferroelectric/Dielectric Superlattice

Abstract Above‐bandgap femtosecond optical excitation of a ferroelectric/dielectric BaTiO ₃ /CaTiO ₃ superlattice leads to structural responses that are a consequence of the screening of the strong electrostatic coupling between the component layers. Time‐resolved X‐ray free‐electron laser diffraction shows that the structural response to optical excitation includes a net lattice expansion of the superlattice consistent with depolarization‐field screening driven by the photoexcited charge carriers. The depolarization‐field‐screening‐driven expansion is separate from a photoacoustic pulse launched from the bottom electrode on which the superlattice is epitaxially grown.
