A measurement of the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen yields a charge radius of the proton that is smaller than the CODATA value by about 5 standard deviations. We explore the possibility that new scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor flavor-conserving nonuniversal interactions may be responsible for the discrepancy. We consider exotic particles that, among leptons, couple preferentially to muons and mediate an attractive nucleon-muon interaction. We find that the many constraints from low energy data disfavor new spin-0, spin-1, and spin-2 particles as an explanation.

Size scaling in the self-immortalization of superdislocations in the L1{sub 2} compounds displaying the yield strength anomaly

A simple statistical analysis of the distribution of superkinks along a single superdislocation is presented. This analysis is then used to estimate the rate of self-immobilization of superdislocations. The self-immobilization rate decreases exponentially with increasing superdislocation length. The implications for experiment are discussed.

The surface-wave magnitude (M/sub s/) and body-wave magnitude (m/sub b/) data for explosions in the western United States are anomalous with respect to such data for the Aleutians, the Sahara, and the USSR. The degree of this anomaly is such that it has significant implications with respect to using magnitude vs yield data from the Nevada Test Site to estimate the yields of explosions in other parts of the world. Anomaly in Dependence of Radiation-induced Vacancy Accumulation on Grain Size

According to conventional steady-state rate theory predictions of displacement damage evolution in irradiated materials, the accumulation of vacancies decreases as grain size decreases. Using atomistic simulations, the authors report a transient anomaly in the dependence of radiation produced vacancy accumulation on grain size. Contrary to the conventional wisdom, the accumulation of vacancies can be higher in smaller grains than in larger grains during a transient stage. The anomaly is a result of competition between two atomic-level processes: grain boundary absorption and bulk recombination of point defects, each of which has characteristic length and time scales.
