Concentration and temperature dependence of hydrogen vibrations along the c axis for hydrogen in yttrium: Evidence of dynamically coupled hydrogen pairs

The c-axis vibrations of hydrogen in yttrium have been measured at various concentrations and temperatures using high-resolution neutron spectroscopy. The unusual splitting of these modes is revealed to be highly sensitive to both conditions and to isotopic dilution. The results indicate that the splitting is caused by hydrogen pairs dynamically coupled across metal atoms and that this interaction is modulated by concentration- and temperature-dependent occupation correlations along the c axis.

Backbone dynamics of a model membrane protein: measurement of individual amide hydrogen-exchange rates in detergent-solubilized M13 coat protein using /sup 13/C NMR hydrogen/deuterium isotope shifts

Hydrogen-exchange rates have been measured for individual assigned amide protons in M13 coat protein, a 50-residue integral membrane protein, using a /sup 13/C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) equilibrium isotope shift technique. The locations of the more rapidly exchanging amides have been determined. In D/sub 2/O solutions, a peptide carbonyl resonance undergoes a small upfield isotope shift (0.08-0.09 ppm) from its position in H/sub 2/O solutions; in 1:1 H/sub 2/O/D/sub 2/O mixtures, the carbonyl line shape is determined by the exchange rate at the adjacent nitrogen atom. Low-Temperature Protein Dynamics: A Simulation Analysis of Interprotein Vibrations and the Boson Peak at 150K

An understanding of low-frequency, collective protein dynamics at low temperatures can furnish valuable information on functional protein energy landscapes, on the origins of the protein glass transition and on protein-protein interactions. Here, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and normal-mode analyses are performed on various models of crystalline myoglobin in order to characterize intra- and interprotein vibrations at 150 K. Principal component analysis of the MD trajectories indicates that the Boson peak, a broad peak in the dynamic structure factor centered at about 2-2.5 meV, originates from 102 collective, harmonic vibrations. Theory and Normal Mode Analysis of Change in Protein Vibrational Dynamics on Ligand Binding

The change of protein vibrations on ligand binding is of functional and thermodynamic importance. Here, this process is characterized using a simple analytical 'ball-and-spring' model and all-atom normal-mode analysis (NMA) of the binding of the cancer drug, methotrexate (MTX) to its target, dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). The analytical model predicts that the coupling between protein vibrations and ligand external motion generates entropy-rich, low-frequency vibrations in the complex.
