We have investigated Co/Pd multilayers deposited on either Ta or indium tin oxide (ITO) seed layers as a potential perpendicular recording media. We have examined the microstructural evolution of the films deposited on the two different types of seed layers and related it to the magnetic properties of the films. Ta underlayer produces a strong {l_angle}111{r_angle} fiber texture in the multilayer while ITO produces randomly oriented grains. Transmission electron microscopy reveals a microstructure of columnar grains separated by less dense material at the boundaries for the multilayers with an ITO underlayer. Magnetic and structural properties of Fe/Pd multilayers studied by magnetic x-ray dichroism and x-ray absorption spectroscopy

The results of magnetic circular x-ray dichroism (MCXD) measurements and extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements (EXAFS) of the Fe K-edges of textured Fe(110)/Pd(111) multilayers are reported. The EXAFS results indicates that the iron in the system goes from bcc to a more densely packed system as the thickness of the iron layer is decreased. The magnetic properties were measured by SQUID magnetometry from 5-350 K. For all the samples, the saturation magnetization was significantly enhanced over the bulk values indicating the interface Pd atoms are polarized by the Fe layer. The enhancement corresponds to a moment of {approx}2.5{mu}{sub B}more » per interface Pd atom.« less

Magnetic and magneto-optical properties of Pd/Cr/Co multilayers

Recent studies found that the (Pt/Co/Pt) trilayers can be used as a unit in combination with nonmagnetic or magnetic layer, X (X=Pd, Ag, Cu, and Ni), to enhance the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the films, reduce the Curie temperature, and alter the magneto-optical properties. The effects of intercalating Cr into Pd/Co multilayers on the magnetic and magneto-optical properties are studied in this article. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy K{sub u} and the coercivity H{sub c} of the system decrease rapidly with increasing the Cr thickness (X{sub Cr}) up to 0.4 nm, and change slightly when Cr thickness further increases. Magnetic properties of Pd/Co multilayers

Measurements of the magnetic anisotropy of a series of Pd/Co multilayers grown by magnetically enhanced dc triode sputter deposition revealed an interface contribution of 0.53 erg/cm{sup 2} and a net volume anisotropy of {minus}13.2{times}10{sup 8} erg/cm{sup 3}. A characteristic reduction of perpendicular anisotropy for ultrathin Co layers ({lt}4 A) is explained by using a pair interaction model to evaluate a thickness dependence of the interface anisotropy. For Pd-Co interfaces with perfectly sharp composition modulation an interface anisotropy of 0.79 erg/cm{sup 2} is predicted. Magnetic properties of Co/Pd multilayers determined by Brillouin light scattering and SQUID magnetometry

Co/Pd multilayers with modulation wavelengths between 4 and 220 A have been prepared by magnetically enhanced dc-triode sputtering on single-crystal sapphire substrates. Their saturation magnetization and volume and interface anisotropies have been investigated using Brillouin light scattering from collective spin waves and by SQUID magnetometry. The saturation magnetization of Co is found to be independent of the Co layer thickness and reduced by about 20% from the Co bulk value.
