The decarbonylation of [Re[sub 2](CO)[sub 10]] on ultrathin MgO(111) films (approximately 50 A) grown on a Mo(110) substrate was investigated with infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption/decomposition. When [Re[sub 2](CO)[sub 10]] was adsorbed at 320 K, it reacted with the MgO(111) surface, forming a rhenium subcarbonyl, [Re(CO)[sub 4](OMg)][sub 2], where (OMg) represents oxygen on the MgO(111) surface. Upon heating to temperatures >400 K, [Re(CO)[sub 4](OMg)][sub 2] was decarbonylated, forming [Re(CO)[sub 3](OMg)[sub 3]]. Spin polarization of quantum well states in copper thin films deposited on a Co(001) substrate

Spin polarized photoemission is used to examine the spin polarization of the quantum well states observed in copper films grown on a fcc Co(001) substrate. The states are observed to predominantly carry minority spin polarization and this is shown through comparison with calculation to reflect a preferential hybridization in the interface. The calculation also provides evidence that the quantum well states observed in the experiments are not only [ital sp] derived but also reflect the hybridization with the more localized copper [ital d] bands.

We present the theory of fine structure of electron states in symmetric and asymmetric zinc-blende-type quantum wells with the (110) crystallographic orientation. By combining the symmetry analysis, sp{sup 3}d{sup 5}s* tight-binding method, and envelope-function approach we obtain quantitative description of in-plane wave vector, well width and applied electric field dependencies of the zero-magnetic-field spin splitting of electron subbands and extract spin-orbit-coupling parameters.

The interfacial and surface properties of thin Fe and Gd films grown on W(110) as studied by scanning tunneling microscopy, site-resolved photoelectron diffraction, and spin polarized photoelectron diffraction

Combined scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) measurements from Gd films grown on W(110) prepared with and without annealing have been used to provide a detailed picture of the growth of such films, permitting a quantitative structural explanation for previously-measured magnetic properties and the identification of a new two-dimensional structure for the first monolayer. The analysis of the film roughness of room-temperature-grown films as a function of coverage and lateral length scale reveals that the growing Gd surface follows scaling laws for a self-affine surface.
