We have performed time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on powder samples of the unconventional spin-Peierls compound TiOBr using the fine-resolution Fermi chopper spectrometer (SEQUOIA) at the SNS. These measurements reveal two branches of magnetic excitations within the commensurate and incommensurate spin-Peierls phases, which we associate with n = 1 and n = 2 triplet excitations out of the singlet ground state. These measurements represent the first direct measure of the singlet-triplet energy gap in TiOBr, which is found to have a value of Eg 21 meV.

Photoaddition and photoreduction of chloranil with arenes via singlet and triplet excited complexes: effects of irradiation wavelength and radical ion pair spin multiplicity

The photochemistry of chloranil (Q) in the presence of the arenes hexamethylbenzene, 1-methyl-, 1,3-dimethyl-, 1,4-dimethyl-, and 2,3-dimethylnaphthalene, and acenaphthene has been investigated. Irradiation in a nonpolar solvent provided ether adducts resulting from formal addition of the quinone to the arene side chain, the hydroquinone, (QH/sub 2/), and in one case, an identifiable oxidation product, acenaphthylene. The quantum yield for these transformations was shown to have a complex dependence on the concentration of the arene and irradiation wavelength. Singlet-triplet Hamiltonian for spin excitations in a Kondo insulator

In the nonsymmetric version of the periodic Anderson model for a Kondo insulator, an effective singlet-triplet Hamiltonian H{sub s-t} with indirect antiferromagnetic f-f exchange is constructed, which makes it possible to analyze the dynamic magnetic susceptibility {chi}{sub f}(k, {omega}) of f electrons. Hamiltonian H{sub s-t} is used to describe the experimentally observed dispersion of the three-level spin excitation spectrum in YbB{sub 12}. A distinguishing feature of this analysis is the introduction of small-radius singlet and triplet collective f-d excitations that form low- and high-lying spin bands during motion over the lattice.

In-Gap Spin Excitations and Finite Triplet Lifetimes in the Dilute Singlet Ground State System SrCu{sub 2-x}Mg{sub x}(BO{sub 3}){sub 2}

High resolution neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal of SrCu{sub 2-x}Mg{sub x}(BO{sub 3}){sub 2} with x{approx}0.05 reveal the presence of new spin excitations within the gap of this quasi-two-dimensional, singlet ground state system. The application of a magnetic field induces Zeeman-split states associated with S=1/2 unpaired spins which are antiferromagnetically correlated with the bulk singlet. Substantial broadening of both the one- and two-triplet excitations in the doped single crystal is observed, as compared with pure SrCu{sub 2}(BO{sub 3}){sub 2}. Theoretical calculations using a variational algorithm and a single quenched magnetic vacancy on an infinite lattice are shown to qualitativelymore » account for these effects.« less
