We consider multipole amplitudes for low-energy pion photoproduction, constructed with minimal model dependence, at single energies. A previous fit making minimal use of Watson's theorem has been reexamined in light of more recent measurements. Problems associated with the choice of a unique solution are discussed. Comparisons with more recent fits to the full resonance region are made. Explanations are suggested for the discrepancies and more precise measurements of the recoil polarization, P, are motivated.

Single photoproduction of negative pions from neutrons by linearly polarized photons in the region of the first pion-nucleon resonance

The angular dependence of the asymmetry in the ..gamma..n..--> pi../sup -/p cross section in a beam of linearly polarized photons has been measured in the region of the first pion-nucleon resonance. Measurements were made in the interval of pion-emission angles from 30 to 140degree in the c.m.s. and in the laboratory energy range from 250 to 500 MeV with 50-MeV steps. Quasimonochromatic polarized photons were obtained from bremsstrahlung of electrons on a diamond single crystal. (AIP)

The results obtained in a single-photoproduction experiment on neutrons in deuterium, with an experimental apparatus made of scintillation counters, spark chambers and a magnetic spectrometer are reported; the explored energy region is one around the second resonance, that is (500 to 900) MeV incident gamma -ray energy. The present situation of the phenomenological analysis of the single photoproduction in the second resonance region is briefly described, and the results of an analysts made are compared with the results obtained by others; in particular the e.m. coupling of the P/sub 11/ isobaric state found by is large, in accordance with themore » results of some others.
