The nonlinear absorption mechanisms of neon atoms to intense, femtosecond kilovolt x rays are investigated. The production of Ne{sup 9+} is observed at x-ray frequencies below the Ne{sup 8+}, 1s{sup 2} absorption edge and demonstrates a clear quadratic dependence on fluence. Theoretical analysis shows that the production is a combination of the two-photon ionization of Ne{sup 8+} ground state and a high-order sequential process involving single-photon production and ionization of transient excited states on a time scale faster than the Auger decay. We find that the nonlinear direct two-photon ionization cross section is orders of magnitude higher than expected frommore » previous calculations.« less

The polarisation response of quantum systems modelling silver and xenon atoms in the field of a high-intensity femtosecond Ti : sapphire laser (photon energy h{omega} Almost-Equal-To 1.5 eV), has been investigated by direct numerical integration of the Schroedinger equation. The applicability ranges of the perturbation theory and polarisation expansion in powers of field are determined. The contributions of excited atoms and electrons in the continuous-spectrum states to the polarisation response at the fundamental frequency, which arise as a result of excitation and photoionisation, are analysed. An era of exploring the interactions of high-intensity, hard X-rays with matter has begun with the start-up of a hard-X-ray free-electron laser, the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). Understanding how electrons in matter respond to ultra-intense X-ray radiation is essential for all applications. Here we reveal the nature of the electronic response in a free atom to unprecedented high-intensity, short-wavelength, high-fluence radiation (respectively 10{sup 18} W cm{sup -2}, 1.5-0.6 nm, {approx}10{sup 5} X-ray photons per {angstrom}{sup 2}). X-ray enhancement in a nanohole target irradiated by intense ultrashort laser pulses

In this paper, we present a comparative study of the laser energy absorption, soft x-ray emission (in the water window region: 2.3-4.4 nm) and hard x-ray emission (in the 2-20 keV range) from planar aluminum and nanohole alumina of 40 nm average diameter, when irradiated by Ti:sapphire laser pulses. The laser pulse duration was varied from 45 to 500 fs, and the focused intensity on the target ranged from {approx}3 x 10{sup 16} W/cm{sup 2} to 3x10{sup 17} W/cm{sup 2}.
