Persistent Octahedral Coordination in Amorphous ${GeO}_{2}$ Up to 100 GPa by $K β^{''}$ X-Ray Emission Spectroscopy

We measure valence-to-core x-ray emission spectra of compressed crystalline GeO₂ up to 56 GPa and of amorphous GeO₂ up to 100 GPa. In a novel approach, we extract the Ge coordination number and mean Ge-O distances from the emission energy and the intensity of the Kβ" emission line. Here, the spectra of high-pressure polymorphs are calculated using the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Trends observed in the experimental and calculated spectra are found to match only when utilizing an octahedral model. The results reveal persistent octahedral Ge coordination with increasing distortion, similar to the compaction mechanism in the sequence of octahedrally coordinated crystallinemore » GeO₂ high-pressure polymorphs.« less

In-Beam $γ$ -Ray Spectroscopy of ${}^{34, 36, 38}{Mg}$ : Merging the $N = 20$ and $N = 28$ Shell Quenching

Neutron-rich N = 22, 24, 26 magnesium isotopes were studied in this paper via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory following secondary fragmentation reactions on a carbon target at ≈ 200 MeV /nucleon. In the one- and two-proton removal channels from ³⁹Al and ⁴⁰Si beams, two distinct γ-ray transitions were observed in ³⁸Mg, while in the one-proton removal reaction from ³⁷Al a new transition was observed in addition to the known 2⁺₁ → 0 ⁺_g.s. decay. Measurements of the $K$ -Shell Opacity of a Solid-Density Magnesium Plasma Heated by an X-Ray Free-Electron Laser

We present measurements of the spectrally resolved x rays emitted from solid-density magnesium targets of varying sub-μm thicknesses isochorically heated by an x-ray laser. The data exhibit a largely thickness independent source function, allowing the extraction of a measure of the opacity to K-shell x rays within well-defined regimes of electron density and temperature, extremely close to local thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. The deduced opacities at the peak of the Kα transitions of the ions are consistent with those predicted by detailed atomic-kinetics calculations.

We performed an x-ray spectroscopic study combining resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and photoelectron spectroscopy on the superconducting ternary silicide YbGa 1 . 15 Si 0 . 85 and nonsuperconducting ternary germanide YbGa x Ge 2 - x ( x =1.0 and 1.1). The Yb valence for all three compounds is found to be about 2.3.
