Small-scale structure of spacetime as the origin of the gravitational constant

We suggest a means of incorporating the Planck length as a fundamental constant determined by the structure of spacetime. In this scheme the spacetime symmetry group is taken as the de Sitter group with radius of curvature proportional to the Planck length, but we argue that the effects of this curvature are not apparent at elementary-particle length scales. To make the connection with gravity we present a formulation of the gravitational interaction as the gauge theory of the de Sitter group. Small-Scale Structure of Spacetime: Bounds and Conjectures

This review consists of two parts. The first part establishes certain astrophysical bounds on the smoothness of classical spacetime.Some of the best bounds to date are based on the absence of vacuum Cherenkov radiation in ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. The second part discusses possible implications of these bounds for the quantum structure of spacetime. One conjecture is that the fundamental length scale of quantum spacetime may be different from the Planck length.

Small-scale angular fluctuations in the microwave background radiation and the existence of isolated large-scale structures in the universe

The relative fluctuation of the present temperature associated with the microwave background radiation (MBR) on a small angular scale, (deltaT/T)/sub 0/, can be related for a general inhomogeneous cosmological model to the kinematical quantities, their gradients, and the Weyl tensor through the geodesic deviation equation. Vacuum fluctuations of twisted fields in the spacetime of a cosmic string

A twisted scalar field conformally coupled to gravitation is used to calculate the vacuum stress-energy tensor in the background spacetime generated by an infinite straight gauge cosmic string. The result found has an absolute numerical value close to the one obtained with a nontwisted conformal scalar field, but their signs are opposite.
