The formation mechanism of five-fold multiply twinned nanoparticles has been a long-term topic because of their geometrical incompatibility. So, various models have been proposed to explain how the internal structure of the multiply twinned nanoparticles accommodates the constraints of the solid-angle deficiency. Here, we investigate the internal structure, strain field and strain energy density of 600 nm sized five-fold multiply twinned gold nanoparticles quantitatively using Bragg coherent diffractive imaging, which is suitable for the study of buried defects and three-dimensional strain distribution with great precision. Generation of multiply folded optical paths

This patent describes a laser resonator. It comprises: an active medium within the resonator capable of supporting laser action; a plurality of solid blocks disposed within the laser resonator, each block having a smaller, multiply folded waveguide channel formed therein; and a multiplicity of mirrors disposed within the resonator. The mirrors being located around the perimeter of the solid blocks, the mirrors being arranged to produce a larger, multiply folded optical path along the waveguide channels.

Folding and stacking defects of graphene flakes probed by electron nanobeam

Combining nanoscale imaging with local electron spectroscopy and diffraction has provided direct information on folding and stacking defects of graphene flakes produced by unrolled multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Structural data obtained by nanoarea electron diffraction complemented with systematic electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements of the surface plasmon losses of single flakes show the presence of flat bilayer regions coexisting with folded areas where the topology of buckled graphene resembles that of warped carbon nanostructures.
