The crystalline and magnetic structures of YMnO{sub 3} and LuMnO{sub 3} hexagonal manganites under pressures of 0-6 GPa and in the temperature range 10-295 K have been investigated by neutron diffraction. Application of pressure leads to a significant decrease in the ordered magnetic moment of Mn ions (at T = 10 K) from 3.27 (0 GPa) to 1.52 {mu}{sub B} (5 GPa) for YMnO{sub 3} and from 2.48 (0 GPa) to 1.98 {mu}{sub B} (6 GPa) for LuMnO{sub 3}. New RMnO{sub 3+δ} (R=Y, Ho; δ≈0.35) phases with modulated structure

A series of hexagonal RMnO{sub 3} (R=Y, Ho–Lu) compounds are first annealed in various highly oxidizing conditions to show that for the largest R constituents, Y and Ho, it is possible to load the phases with large amounts of excess oxygen. Within the oxygen-annealed samples we identify new heavily-oxygenated phases, that is, YMnO{sub 3.35} and HoMnO{sub 3.34}. The former is then thoroughly characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction. Twenty new ternary representatives of the Gd₁₄Ag₅₁ structure type have been synthesized within the R-Au-M family (R = Y, La–Nd, Sm–Tb, Ho, Er, Yb, Lu; M = Al, Ga, Ge, In, Sn, Sb, Bi) using solid state synthesis techniques. The list of post transition metals (M) involved in the formation of this type of structure could be augmented by five new representatives.
