We present and discuss the properties of the coherent electromagnetic fields of a very short, ultrarelativistic bunch in a rectangular vacuum chamber inside a bending magnet. The analysis is based on the results of a direct numerical solution of Maxwell's equations together with Newton's equations. We use a new dispersion-free time-domain algorithm which employs a more efficient use of finite element mesh techniques and, hence, produces self-consistent and stable solutions for very short bunches. Electric Field Calculation of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation via the Jefimenko Equation

The electric field of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) from an electron beam was investigated by employing an alternate formulation of the Maxwell equation, i.e., the Jefimenko field equation where the electric field depends only on the retarded charge density and retarded current density as described by McDonald1 . From this approach, a simple program is developed in python to calculate the electric field from CSR particle-in-cell(PIC) simulation data. For the CSR problem it is intended that the results of this calculation will be used to assist in the diagnosis of discrepancies found during previous PIC simulation.

Numerical Calculation of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation Effects Using TraFiC{sub 4}

Coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) occurs when short bunches travel on strongly bent trajectories. Its effects on high-quality beams can be severe and are well understood qualitatively. For quantitative results, however, one has to rely on numerical methods. There exist several simulation codes utilizing different approaches. The authors describe in some detail the code TraFiC{sup 4} developed at DESY for design and analysis purposes, which approaches the problem from first principles and solves the equations of motion either perturbatively or self-consistently.
