Turbulence and bias-induced flows in simple magnetized toroidal plasmas are explored with global three-dimensional fluid simulations, focusing on the parameters of the Helimak experiment. The simulations show that plasma turbulence and transport in the regime of interest are dominated by the ideal interchange instability. The application of a bias voltage alters the structure of the plasma potential, resulting in the equilibrium sheared flows.These bias-induced vertical flows located in the gradient region appear to reduce the radial extent of turbulent structures,and thereby lower the radial plasma transport on the low field side.

Turbulence Phase Space in Simple Magnetized Toroidal Plasmas

Plasma turbulence in a simple magnetized torus (SMT) is explored for the first time with three-dimensional global fluid simulations. Three turbulence regimes are described: an ideal interchange mode regime, a previously undiscovered resistive interchange mode regime, and a drift-wave regime. As the pitch of the field lines is decreased, the simulations exhibit a transition from the first regime to the second, while the third--the drift-wave regime--is likely accessible to the experiments only at very low collisionalities.

Blob-induced toroidal momentum transport in simple magnetized plasmas

The link between toroidal flows and density blobs is experimentally demonstrated in TORPEX simple magnetized plasmas: momentum is transferred from an ideal-interchange mode to density blobs. The phase shift between the toroidal flow and the density perturbations observed in the interchange mode where the blob is born is conserved along the blob radial trajectory. This leads to dipolar structures of the blob-induced flow or to monopolar perturbations, so large that the toroidal flow gets transiently reversed. The turbulent toroidal momentum flux is dominated either by the nonlinear flux or by the convective part but not by the Reynolds stress component.

Modifications of turbulence and turbulent transport associated with a bias-induced confinement transition in the Large Plasma Device

Azimuthal flow is driven in the edge of the Large Plasma Device (LAPD) [W. Gekelman et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 62, 2875 (1991)] through biasing a section of the vacuum vessel relative to the plasma source cathode. As the applied bias exceeds a threshold, a transition in radial particle confinement is observed, evidenced by a dramatic steepening in the density profile, similar to the L- to H-mode transition in toroidal confinement devices. The threshold behavior and dynamic behavior of radial transport is related to flow penetration and the degree of spatial overlap between the flow shear and density gradient profiles.more »« less

Turbulence in toroidally confined plasma: ion temperature gradient driven turbulence: dynamics of magnetic relaxation in current carrying plasma

This thesis is devoted to two studies of low-frequency turbulence in toroidally confined plasma. Low-frequency turbulence is believed to play an important role in anomalous transport in toroidal confinement devices. The first study pertains the development of an analytic theory of ion-temperature-gradient-driven turbulence in tokamaks. Energy conserving, renormalized spectrum equations are derived and solved in order to obtain the spectra of stationary ion temperature gradient driven turbulence. Corrections to mixing length estimates are calculated explicitly. The resulting anomalous ion thermal diffusivity is derived and is found to be consistent with experimentally-deduced ion thermal diffusivities.
