Topological insulator Bi{sub 2}Se{sub 3} thin films grown on double-layer graphene by molecular beam epitaxy

Atomically flat thin films of topological insulator Bi{sub 2}Se{sub 3} have been grown on double-layer graphene formed on 6H-SiC(0001) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. By a combined study of reflection high energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy, we identified the Se-rich condition and temperature criterion for layer-by-layer growth of epitaxial Bi{sub 2}Se{sub 3} films. The as-grown films without doping exhibit a low defect density of 1.0{+-}0.2x10{sup 11}/cm{sup 2}, and become a bulk insulator at a thickness of ten quintuple layers, as revealed by in situ angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurement.

Raman measurements of a Fano-type surface phonon mode associated with Dirac surface states (SS) in Bi{sub 2}Se{sub 3} topological insulator thin films allowed an unambiguous determination of the electron-phonon coupling strength in Dirac SS as a function of film thickness ranging from 2 to 40 nm. A non-monotonic enhancement of the electron-phonon coupling strength with maximum for the 8–10 nm thick films was observed. The non-monotonicity is suggested to originate from plasmon-phonon coupling which enhances electron-phonon coupling when free carrier density in Dirac SS increases with decreasing film thickness and becomes suppressed for thinnest films when anharmonic coupling between in-plane and out-of-planemore »« less

The surface states of the 3D topological insulator (TI), Bi₂Se₃, are known to host two-dimensional Dirac plasmon polaritons (DPPs) in the terahertz spectral range. In TI thin films, the DPPs excited on the top and bottom surfaces couple, leading to an acoustic mode and an optical plasmon mode. Vertical coupling in these materials is, therefore, reasonably well-understood, but in-plane coupling among localized TI DPPs has yet to be investigated. Due to their exceptional orientation of 2D nanofillers, layer–by–layer (LbL) assembled polymer/graphene oxide thin films exhibit unmatched mechanical performance relative to any conventionally produced counterparts with similar composition. Unprecedented mechanical property improvement, by replacing graphene oxide with pristine graphene, is demonstrated in this work. Polyvinylpyrrolidone–stabilized graphene platelets are alternately deposited with poly(acrylic acid) using hydrogen bonding assisted LbL assembly. Transmission electron microscopy imaging and the Halpin–Tsai model are used to demonstrate, for the first time, that intact graphene can be processed from water to generate polymer nanocomposite thin films with simultaneous parallel–alignment, high packing density, and exfoliation.
