Applied pressure drives the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn5 toward a quantum critical point that becomes hidden by a dome of unconventional superconductivity. Magnetic fields suppress this superconducting dome, unveiling the quantum phase transition of local character. Here in this paper, we show that 5% magnetic substitution at the Ce site in CeRhIn₅, either by Nd or Gd, induces a zero-field magnetic instability inside the superconducting state. Magnitude of the magnetic exchange interaction in the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn₅

We have used high-resolution neutron spectroscopy experiments to determine the complete spin wave spectrum of the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn₅. The spin wave dispersion can be quantitatively reproduced with a simple J₁-J₂ model that also naturally explains the magnetic spin-spiral ground state of CeRhIn5 and yields a dominant in-plane nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange constant J₀ = 0.74 meV. Our results pave the way to a quantitative understanding of the rich low-temperature phase diagram of the prominent CeTIn₅ (T = Co, Rh, Ir) class of heavy fermion materials.

Evidence for spiral magnetic order in the heavy fermion material CeRhIn{sub 5}

We report {sup 115}In nuclear quadrupolar resonance measurements of the heavy fermion compound CeRhIn{sub 5} in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic states. The magnetic order is consistent with a model of helical modulation of the Ce moments that is incommensurate with the lattice, and the magnetic dynamics indicate possible two-dimensional behavior. Anisotropic electronic and magnetic properties of the quasi-two-dimensional heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn{sub 5}

We have used high pulsed magnetic fields to 50 T to observe de Haas--van Alphen oscillations in the tetragonal antiferromagnet CeRhIn{sub 5}, which has an enhanced value of the electronic specific heat coefficient {gamma}{approx}>420 mJ/molK{sup 2}. For T<T{sub N}, the specific heat data at zero applied magnetic field are consistent with the existence of an anisotropic spin-density wave opening a gap in the Fermi surface. The low-temperature magnetization reveals a magnetic phase transition that appears to be first order in nature. Quantum oscillations, which are observed for T<T{sub N} when B{parallel}[100] and B{parallel}[001], reveal an anisotropic Fermi surface. The temperaturemore »« less
