A fundamental problem in modern thermodynamics is how a molecular-scale machine performs useful work, while operating away from thermal equilibrium without excessive dissipation. To this end, we derive a friction tensor that induces a Riemannian manifold on the space of thermodynamic states. Within the linear-response regime, this metric structure controls the dissipation of finite-time transformations, and bestows optimal protocols with many useful properties. We discuss the connection to the existing thermodynamic length formalism, and demonstrate the utility of this metric by solving for optimal control parameter protocols in a simple nonequilibrium model.

Optimal paths for thermodynamic systems: The ideal diesel cycle

Optimal control theory is used to determine the piston trajectory which yields maximum power output for a model which incorporates the diesel engine's major irreversibilities. Optimal trajectories were obtained for the cases of unconstrained and constrained piston acceleration. Optimizing the path for our standard engine increased both the net work output per cycle and the net efficiency by about 10%.

Square-root actions, metric signature, and the path integral of quantum gravity

We consider quantization of the Baierlein-Sharp-Wheeler form of the gravitational action, in which the lapse function is determined from the Hamiltonian constraint. This action has a square root form, analogous to the actions of the relativistic particle and Nambu string. We argue that path-integral quantization of the gravitational action should be based on a path integrand exp[ {radical}{ital i} {ital S}] rather than the familiar Feynman expression exp[{ital iS}], and that unitarity requires integration over manifolds of both Euclidean and Lorentzian signature. The objective of this study is to evaluate the conceptual soundness of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH) program's revised goals and establish and apply a framework to identify and recommend metrics that are the most useful for measuring PATH's progress.
