We report magnetic properties of the antiferromagnet Zn_xCu_2-xV₂O₇ (ZnCVO) with x ≈ 0.06 have been thoroughly investigated on powder and single-crystal samples. The crystal structure determination using powder x-ray and neutron diffraction confirms that our ZnCVO samples are isostructural with β-Cu₂V₂O₇ (β-CVO) with a small deviation in the lattice parameters. Macroscopic magnetic property measurements also confirm the similarity between the two compounds. The Cu²⁺ spins were found to align along the crystallographic c axis, antiparallel to their nearest neighbors connected by the leading exchange interaction J₁. Magnetic-field-induced antiferromagnetic ordering in frustrated quasi-two-dimensional systems

Some of the quasi-two-dimensional nonsuperconducting systems MESr{sub 2}RCu{sub 2}O{sub 7{minus}x} (ME=Al, Tl, and Bi; R=a rare-earth ion) do not possess the long-range antiferromagnetic order (LRO) but acquire it in an external magnetic field. A theory of the magnetic-field-induced two-sublattice LRO is constructed for quasi-two-dimensional systems with quantum spins. It is based on the fact that the magnetic field suppresses the quantum spin fluctuations, and magnetic anisotropy, interplane interaction, and interaction with large-spin ions facilitate the appearance of LRO in the field. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Field-driven Phase Transitions in a Quasi-two-dimensional Quantum Antiferromagnet

We report magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements as a function of applied magnetic field and temperature to characterize the S = 1/2 quasi-two-dimensional (2D) frustrated magnet piperazinium hexachlorodicuprate (PHCC). The experiments reveal four distinct phases. At low temperatures and fields the material forms a quantum paramagnet with a 1 meV singlet triplet gap and a magnon bandwidth of 1.7 meV. The singlet state involves multiple spin pairs some of which have negative ground state bond energies. We have measured the field-dependent heat capacity in the tetragonal antiferromagnets CeRhIn{sub 5} and Ce{sub 2}RhIn{sub 8}, both of which have an enhanced value of the electronic specific heat coefficient {gamma}{approx}400 mJ/mol Ce K{sup 2} above T{sub N}. For T<T{sub N}, the specific heat data at zero applied magnetic field are consistent with the existence of an anisotropic spin-density wave opening a gap in the Fermi surface for CeRhIn{sub 5}, while Ce{sub 2}RhIn{sub 8} shows behavior consistent with a simple antiferromagnetic magnon.
