CuAl₂O₄ is a normal spinel oxide having quantum spin, S = 1/2 for Cu²⁺. It is a rather unique feature that the Cu²⁺ ions of CuAl₂O₄ sit at a tetrahedral position, not like the usual octahedral position for many oxides. At low temperatures, it exhibits all the thermodynamic evidence of a quantum spin glass. Extended Scattering Continua Characteristic of Spin Fractionalization in the Two-dimensional Frustrated Quantum Magnet Cs₂CuCl₄Observed by Neutron Scattering

The magnetic excitations of the quasi-2D spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs{sub 2}CuCl{sub 4} are explored throughout the 2D Brillouin zone using high-resolution time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. Measurements are made both in the magnetically ordered phase, stabilized at low temperatures by the weak interlayer couplings, as well as in the spin liquid phase above the ordering temperature T{sub N}, when the 2D magnetic layers are decoupled. Repulsive Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in the quasi-one-dimensional alternating spin-$$\frac{1}{2}$$ antiferromagnet NaVOPO₄

Here, we probe the magnetic field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) state in the bond-alternating spin1/2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) chain compound NaVOPO₄ using thermodynamic as well as local μSR and ³¹P NMR probes down to mK temperatures in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The μSR and NMR relaxation rates in the gapless TLL regime decay slowly following characteristic power-law behavior, enabling us to directly determine the interaction parameter K as a function of the magnetic field. The magnetic properties of LiCu{sub 2}O{sub 2} single-crystal samples without twinning are investigated using electron spin resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The experimental results obtained are described in terms of the model of a planar spiral antiferromagnet for the orientation of the magnetic field H -parallel b or H -parallel c and the model of a collinear spin-modulated antiferromagnet for the orientation of the static magnetic field H -parallel a.

Spin liquid and quantum phase transition without symmetry breaking in a frustrated three-dimensional Ising model

We show that the highly frustrated transverse-field Ising model on the three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice realizes a first-order phase transition without symmetry breaking between the low-field Coulomb quantum spin liquid and the high-field polarized phase. The quantum phase transition is located quantitatively by comparing low- and high-field series expansions. Furthermore, the intriguing properties of the elementary excitations in the polarized phase are investigated. We argue that this model can be achieved experimentally by applying mechanical strain to a classical spin-ice material composed of non-Kramers spins such as Ho₂Ti₂O₇.
